This Tuesday, April 20, the program at the Bay City Rotary Club will feature "Bay City in Bloom," a community beautification initiative associated with the national "America in Bloom."

Speakers will include Dick Somalski of Bay Landscaping, Paul Begick of Begick's Nursery, Sita Compton of Bay City in Bloom and Darwin Baranski, city parks director.

The April 27 program will feature Laura Ogar, Bay County director of environmental affairs and community development, speaking on the new Bay Futures economic development organization.

Bay City in Bloom is a non-profit volunteer organization formed in 2002 as part of America in Bloom. The group focuses on civic beautification under the motto "Planting Pride in Our Community." Environmental awareness and preservation of heritage and culture are key parts of the program.

Businesses and residents are recognized for outstanding maintenance and landscaping and a nationwide competition is held for beautification.

Public sites in Bay City are available for adoption such as parks, portions of the Riverwalk/Railtrail and parking areas.

Rotary is one organization that will play a major role in parks and landscaping projects tobeautify the downtown area. Funds raised in the club's major project over the next five years will go for the creation of pocket parks downtown and for landscaping around the Pere Marquette Union Station slated to be renovated by foundations and community organizations.

An upcoming fundraiser is the Rotary Golf Outing that will be held Monday, June 7 at the Bay City Country Club. Brian Kay and Jeff Yantz are heading the golf outing committee.

Registration for the outing will begin at 11:30 a.m. and a shotgun start is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Information is available about playing in the outing or sponsorships and prize donations from Kay at 894-3838 or abckay2@chartermi.net or Jeff Yantz at yantz@chartermi.net. The outing is open to all including non-members of Rotary. Price of $95 per person includes 18 holes of golf with cart, food and opportunity to win prizes.

The Country Club's 18 hole course, designed by Art Johnson, was constructed in 1965. It is a classic long ball hitter's layout and has been a qualifying site for the U.S. Open.
