Two Michigan authors and a Michigan photographer will sign and sell their recently published books during a book signing event at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University Thursday, Aug. 13.

John Gallagher and Balthazar Korab, author and photographer of "Great Architecture of Michigan," and George Jacob, author of "MUSEUM DESIGN: The FUTURE," will be at the Museum with copies of their books from 5 to 7 p.m.

Gallagher is an architecture critic for the Detroit Free Press and co-author of "AIA Detroit: The American Institute of Architects Guide to Detroit Architecture" (Wayne State University Press, 2002).

Korab is an award-winning photographer whose images have been exhibited in prominent museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, Centre Canadian d'Architecture, and the Venice Biennale. His work is also included in many collections, including the Chase Manhattan Collection, the Menil Collection, and the United States Library of Congress.

In addition to icons like the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing, and the Fisher Building in Detroit, "Great Architecture of Michigan" includes vernacular charms like the D. H. Day Farm near Sleeping Bear Dunes, architectural survivors like the Point Betsie Lighthouse, and some 35 private homes. A spirited collection of churches, theaters, office towers, stadiums, and government buildings rounds out the selections. The emphasis throughout is to help the public see, understand, and appreciate what makes these buildings great.

The combination of Korab's artful yet documentary photographs, Gallagher?s evocative yet concise descriptions, and an elegant and clear design make this book one to be treasured for years to come.

"Great Architecture of Michigan" was published in 2008 by Wayne State University Press.

Jacob is Vice President of Design Craftsmen in Midland. He has worked on numerous museum projects spanning many countries and taught at various universities. In addition, Jacob has been the founding director of two science museums and has been an advocate of reform in the museum design-build industry.

"MUSEUM DESIGN: The FUTURE" features a spectrum of museum projects from around the world recently completed or in the design stages. The visual kaleidoscope of designs drawn from the land, heritage, historic events, culture and from envisioning future, offers a perspective on these institutions of non-formal learning and inspiration that will shape our minds in times to come.

The 250-page book also provides an insight into the process, methodology, project teams, energy efficiency and the ever-evolving innovative use of sustainable materials that go towards a symbiotic relationship with their relative environments. With an introduction by Hal Aber, Director of Facilities Planning and Design at the Smithsonian Institution, and foreword by Chase W. Rynd, President and Director of the National Building Museum in Washington D.C., the book illustrates projects by museum designers and architects including Jeff Kennedy, Tom Hennes, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvell, Denton-Korker-Marshall, Cesar Pelli, Renzo Piano, among others.

"MUSEUM DESIGN: The FUTURE" was published in 2009 by BookSurge, a DBA of On-Demand Publishing.

Those wishing to attend the book signing and reception are asked to RSVP by calling the Fredericks Museum at (989)964-7082.
