Bay City Central's Trenton Robinson is emerging as the potential starting free safety for the Michigan State University Spartan football team this fall.

The 5-10, 190 pound sophomore reportedly had an impressive spring, according to Spartan sports sources, making eight tackles and breaking up a pass in the Green-White spring game.

As a freshman in 2008, Robinson saw action in eight games and collected six tackles (2 solos, 4 assists) on special teams. He recorded one tackle each vs. Eastern Michigan, Florida Atlantic, Notre Dame, Indiana, Northwestern and Georgia.

Rated among the nation's top cornerbacks by Scouts, Inc. (No. 58), Robinson was named to PrepStar's All-Midwest Team. Also, he was ranked among the state's top seniors by The Detroit News (No. 13), Scouts, Inc. (No. 15), Detroit Free Press (No. 16), Lansing State Journal (No. 19) and Rivals.com (No. 25).

The former Wolfpack star was named to The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press Dream Teams. He was three-year starter for Coach Morley Fraser at Central, seeing action at safety, linebacker, wide receiver and running back during his prep career.

As a high school senior Robinson made 45 tackles (12 solos, 33 assists), four interceptions and 14 pass break-ups. He also recovered two fumbles in 2007, rushed for 472 yards and five touchdowns and caught 16 passes for 238 yards (14.9 avg.) and two scores. He earned first-team All-Valley honors as a junior.

The son of Mario Robinson and Tammy Wilkinson, he was born Feb. 16, 1990. He is majoring in general business administration - pre-law at MSU.

The Spartans open Sept. 5 against Montana State in East Lansing, followed by an inter-state contest against always dangerous Central Michigan University on Sept. 12, also at home.

The Spartans are loaded with talent, especially on defense, including such familiar names as Chris Rucker, Danny Fortener and Ross Weaver.

The SpartyMSU blog says Robinson will be heard from often on one of the nation's toughest defenses and predicts a blockbuster 11-1 season with the only loss seen coming from Penn State.####
