Rotarians in the US are lucky said past district governor
Bob Chadwick. "The market is down, you can't sell a house, things are tough economically. But We don't really know hunger. We don't know poverty. We don't anything about not having health care available to us. And really we don't know anything about illiteracy." But that would be the fate of millions of children and their families around the world were it not for the Rotary Foundation. "Part of being a Rotarian is to not only give to the community, but to give internationally to the foundation".
The Rotary Foundation is well known for it's efforts to eradicate Polio from the world and, thanks to Rotarians, that job is almost done. But Rotary also provides a wide range of health care to people around the world.
The RI Foundation also provides food services around the world but Bob reminded Rotarians of the work in our country as well. Rotarians run food pantries and similar services around the US. Through both the RI Foundation and local club efforts like those of the Bay City Club, address hunger.
Rotarians in the US and in most advanced countries take clean, potable water for granted. But in so much of the world that is not the norm. Rotary has pioneered water program by providing wells, water purification and filtration systems where they are most needed.
The goal of Rotary and the Bay City Club is that every member contributes something to the foundation every year. The amount is not as important as the participation.
CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
New Sargent At Arms Nancy Greve took the podium in the role of TVs Judge Judy to dispense some order and justice to the room. "Despite what you might think of the TV show", said Nancy, "Judy Sheindlin is a fascinating woman with a long history as a prosecutor and judge in New York."
The club welcomed Tom Tabor for his second final visit to Bay City. For many years Tom performed the the
Induction Ceremony for new Rotarians. This Tuesday he filled that role again as the club welcomed new members Drew Kornecky and Bobbi Anker. Bobbi has been an honorary member for years and now takes her place as a full member.
The dictionary project continues to receive thanks from kids and praise from the community. An e-mail received this week reads:
My granddaughter attends Bangor Lincoln School and is a 3rd grader. Recently she came home with a dictionary from the Rotary Club. I would like to thank you for that gift. And she is using it. In fact she picks our different words about every day to check out its meaning. Again Thank you.
Rotary applauds Lee and Molly Newton who, along with their staff at Newton Eyecare Center, held a "Community Eye Care Day" last Friday. The clinic provided free eye exams and glasses, at no charge, to people who are unemployed or without vision insurance. Lee and Molly truly illustrate the spirit and calling of Rotary.
Meeting Times:
Lunch is now on the table at noon allowing members to start the meal earlier. The meeting starts by 12:30 and the speaker starting by 12:50. The meeting typically adjourns around 1:15!
