Last Weeks Meeting - November 3, 2009

Rotarians in the US are lucky said past district governor Bob Chadwick. "The market is down, you can't sell a house, things are tough economically. But We don't really know hunger. We don't know poverty. We don't anything about not having health care available to us. And really we don't know anything about illiteracy." But that would be the fate of millions of children and their families around the world were it not for the Rotary Foundation. "Part of being a Rotarian is to not only give to the community, but to give internationally to the foundation".

The Rotary Foundation is well known for it's efforts to eradicate Polio from the world and, thanks to Rotarians, that job is almost done. But Rotary also provides a wide range of health care to people around the world.

The RI Foundation also provides food services around the world but Bob reminded Rotarians of the work in our country as well. Rotarians run food pantries and similar services around the US. Through both the RI Foundation and local club efforts like those of the Bay City Club, address hunger.

Rotarians in the US and in most advanced countries take clean, potable water for granted. But in so much of the world that is not the norm. Rotary has pioneered water program by providing wells, water purification and filtration systems where they are most needed.

The goal of Rotary and the Bay City Club is that every member contributes something to the foundation every year. The amount is not as important as the participation.
