"December 7th, a date which will live in infamy." Those infamous words came very close to describing the mood felt Monday night at the opening game of the new basketball season.

Starting off the game, the Cougars fell behind quickly. Barely five minutes into the game, All Saints remained scoreless on the board; facing an 8 point deficit. The All Saints Cougars fought back; however, and, thanks to a 3-pointer from Adam Pijaszek and a last second 2-pointer from Jimmy Hunter, went to the second period down 10-5.

The Cougars found their groove in the second period, allowing Pinconning to pick up only nine 8 points, while they added 13 to their score. Drew Janer was a huge factor in the comeback. Janer tacked 6 valuable points unto the Cougars score and the Cougars headed to the locker room tied 18-18.

The game remained up for grabs for the much of the rest of regulation time. Near the end of the third period; however, Pinconning again took charge of the game. Pinconning's #1 scorer for the night, Casey Pashak totaled nine points in the pivotal third period. Down 30-25, everything changed for the Cougars at 3:41 left in the third period. Stealing the ball from a stunned Pinconning attacker, Janer flew down the court on a breakaway and, to the delight of the home crowd, proved he could dunk a basketball during a game.

Still down 27-30, the Cougars situation would only improve by 1 scant point before the third period was over. The game remained close, with the Cougars trailing 32-34 at the start of the final period.

The Cougars kept it close in the fourth period - even taking the lead twice in the close contest. Unfortunately for the Cougars, a late 3-pointer from Pashak put Pinconning up 49-44. With barely ten seconds left on the clock the desperate Cougars answered with a 3-pointer of their own from sharp-shooter Adam Pijaszek.

Those three points put the Cougars within two points of sending the game into overtime. Sadly it wasn't meant to be. Pinconning's defenders stubbornly refused to allow the Cougars to even get one game-saving shot attempt in before the final buzzer.

The Cougars performed admirably in their first game back this season. After losing two of their regular top scorers from last year who graduated, many thought the Cougars were in trouble this season. The Cougars proved them wrong with a "good start" to their season Monday night as Coach Mike Showalter said. The returning All Saints Head Coach said his team "needs to step up aggressively with the ball" , but he felt his team was on the right track towards having another great season. The Cougars begin their regular season at home next Tuesday night versus Carrolton.
