Hey, Bay City: welcome to the new world of online information.

The City of Bay City is signing up friends on Facebook (log on through the city website). Deputy City Manager/Clerk Dana Muscott noted that more than 400 "fans" had signed up by Dec. 11.

"We are happy with the number of members we have on the website so far and continue to update the information daily," she wrote in the city manager's recent general information memo. "We have posted information relevant to the snow event, Project Blue Light, free light bulbs from the Electric Department and City gift certificates for sale."

The Police Department is texting information instantaneously through text messaging, alerts and e-mails to those who sign up at http://local.nixle.com/register -- The service is free and contains no advertisements.

"Nixle enables us to provide up-to-date, personally relevant and proximate information keeping our community informed," states the website, adding:

"Information provided by the Police Department will be accurate and instantaneous. The variety of topic possibilities include upcoming events, road closures and areas to avoid, requests for help in locating a suspect or missing person, crime prevention tips and so forth."

Project Blue Light was developed by Concerns of Police Survivors Inc., a non-profit operation which represents families and friends of officers killed in the line of duty. Project Blue Light is a national effort to honor and remember officers and their families during the holiday season.

The Nixle website notes: "Nixle is a service that allows you to receive trusted, up-to-date neighborhood information for where you live, work, visit -- or for where your family and friends are located throughout the country. The service is at no cost to you. However, standard text messaging rates apply.

"You choose the information you want, for the locations you want, from urgent public safety alerts to less time sensitive advisories and community information.

"You choose how you want to receive the information, whether it is over your cell phone by text message, by email, or over the web.

"You stay connected to what is happening in the communities and the locations that are relevant to you!"
