Chamber of Commerce Presents Development Awards

At Wednesday's "Bay Area... On The Go!" event, the Chamber of Commerce presented five "development awards" to area businesses which made significant investments in the Bay Area.

Dow Corning Corporation received it's award for the new $20 million compound semiconductor plant. This plant will result in more jobs for the Bay Area and a significant increase in the local tax base. It sets the stage for Dow Corning to use silicon semiconductors in new bio-tech, alternative lighting and energy applications. Accepting the award for Dow Corning was Global Vice President Jean-Marc Gilson.

Valley Publishing Company, a joint venture of the Bay City Times and the Saginaw News, received the "Bay Area... On The Go!" development award for the $6.4 million renovation and expansion of its new printing plant located in the Valley Center Technology Park. Besides a 30,000 square foot expansion to the existing 39,000 square foot facility, the company will be investing another $16.8 million in state of the art equipment. Accepting the award for Valley Publishing were Publisher Kevin Dykema of the Bay City Times and Renee Hampton, Publisher of the Saginaw News.

The third Development Award was presented to "S.C. Johnson & Son", the areas newest major manufacturing company. S.C. Johnson employs approximately 550 Bay Area residents. In March 2003 the company added a new 105,000 square foot manufacturing plant to the 100,000 sq. ft. Research, Development and Engineer Center which wasconstructed two years previously. In the past two years the company has invested $30.8 million in the Bay City plant and $65 million of the past five years. Accepting the award for S.C. Johnson & Son was Joe Liefbroer, Bay City Site Manager.

Bay City's Independent Bank received the fourth award for it's $5 million investment in its Bay Area facilities. Both the interior and the exterior of the company's headquarters and annex were redesigned and renovated from the ground up. The facilityat 800 Washington was remodeled to serve the bank's mortgate operations. The Euclid Avenue Branch was completely redesigned and a new branch bank was built in Pinnconning. The bank has increased employment by 25 people in the last 12 months. The development award was received by Brad Kessel, President of Independent Bank.

The final development award was presented to the new jewel of Bay City's Riverfront, the Doubletree Hotel Conference Center. This $35 million project will provide 164 new direct jobs and some 376 indirect jobs. The project stands to become the symbol and focal point of Bay City's riverfront. Accepting the award for Wenonah Park Properties, Inc. was chairman Bob Sarow and City Manager Robert Belleman.
