The Bay City Rowing Club held their annual open house and "Learn To Row Day" last Saturday. In conjunction with this year's event the club hosted the 6th annual "Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum / Los Cuatro Amigos Canoe Classic" and a visit from St. Mary's air ambulance helicopters.

The canoe races, sponsored by the Rowing Club, are a sanctioned Michigan Canoe Racing Association event. These races occupied much of the morning with dozens of canoes making the circuit from the boathouse, out into the river, downtown to Hooters and back. The canoe races have used the Rowing Club's facilities for several years but this was the first time that the races were held in conjunction with the Learn To Row Day.

A special treat for everyone was by a visit from the St. Mary's FlightCare and Life Net helicopters. The choppers arrived around 11:00 and were open for everyone to view and ask questions. The helicopters serve then entire mid-state area and provide an essential service. In many cases the helicopters can reach a traumascene in one quarter to one third the time of a ground vehicle. Last year the service made over 500 patient related flights.

Besides canoes and helicopters and, of course, hot dogs grilled on the front porch, the Rowing Club also held its annual "Learn To Row" clinic. This free program is held annually in conjunctions with the US Rowing Association's National Learn To Row Day. Club coaches provide basic instruction in boat handling and safety then put people into team boats and get out on the water.

The Bay City Rowing Club has been a fixture on Bay City's Middle Grounds for over ten years. Home to the Central High School Rowing Crew, the club also has a strong public program and invites everyone to join and enjoy the sport of rowing.
