The All Saints Cougars proved their defense is just as good as ever. Up by just one point at intermission, the Cougars cruised to a 15 point lead in the one-sided third period before the Bearcats made a huge comeback effort in the fourth. While many teams dread comebacks from their opponents, the Cougars thrive off them. Raising their game to the next level, the Cougars defended their lead in playoff form and walked away with a 58-53 victory.

The Cougars hit the hardwood with determination. After watching both the All Saints Freshmen and JV teams fall to the Ubly Bearcats, the Varsity Cougars were more determined than ever to come away with a win.

The Bearcats struck first with a quick lay-up. Un-phased, Thomas Villano #41 answered for the Cougars seconds later. The stage was set, and both teams were primed for a score fest. Oddly enough, no such scoring binge occurred. Defense was the story of the low-scoring first half. The Bearcats came out tough on their home court - taking a 12-10 lead at the end of the first period over the Cougars.

The story of the second period was Cougar Adam Pijaszek #20. All Saints added 16 points to their total in the second - 9 of those points were scored off 3-pointers from Pijaszek. Making it look easy, Pijaszek showed off his 3-point mastery with six 3-pointers for the night. Despite the effort from Pijaszek, a 3-pointer from Bearcat Justin Cleary #10 and a handful of free throws kept the game close, and the Cougars headed to their locker room up 26-25.

Perhaps someone put something in the Cougars water during intermission because the Cougars took their game to a whole new level during the third period. The Cougars added another 16 points to their score, while at the same time turning away all Bearcat scoring chances save two scant lay-ups. With All Saints dominance clearly established, the Cougars confidently headed into the pivotal fourth period leading 42-29.

Whatever was in the Cougars water was in the Bearcats water in the fourth period. A hat trick of 3-pointers from Adam Glaza #12, and 5 points from Eric Boons #32 paved the way for a massive Ubly comeback. With 4:34 seconds left All Saints head coach Mike Showalter called a timeout - his team was clinging to a 48-44 lead.

The Cougars came back on the court and fought fire with fire. A few invaluable lay-ups put the pressure back on the Bearcats. The Bearcats tried to answer, but their efforts were rewarded with a handful of fouls. The Cougars tacked on 6 points to their score off of those fouls and used them to secure their victory.

After the game, Coach Showalter was very satisfied with the Cougars performance. "This was a quality win for the Cougars," Showalter said. When asked about his teams defensive stand in the fourth period coach Showalter addwd: "We played just enough defense to win a tough game."

The Cougars will have a week off before returning to action next Friday on the road.
