Western has been showing great improvement over the last several weeks. Following a big win over John Glenn, the girls were looking to notch their first Saginaw Valley League win of the season and keep their climb going. An explosive third quarter helped the Lady Warriors achieve that goal as they defeated Mt. Pleasant, 47-44 Friday night.

Western came out in a full court press. While the pressure kept Mt. Pleasant from getting into any offensive rhythm, crisp ball movement eventually found an open shot. Meanwhile, the Oilers used a half court pressure defense to spread Western out. The result was both teams matching baskets with Mt. Pleasant taking an 11-8 advantage.

The pressure defenses kept both teams from working the ball inside. Western settled for long range shots with little success as Mallory Sebald scored the lone bucket fro Western to go with Shannon Sebald's two free throws. Mt. Pleasant faired only slightly better scoring eight points to lead at the half 19-12.

Following the break, both teams returned to full court pressure with Western enjoying a decided advantage. Having switched to a full court trap press, the Warriors forced several turnovers converting them into easy lay-ups. The post players attacked the basket more hitting their shots to overtake and build a lead. The Oilers caught a break as Shiloh Tuma hit a 3 point buzzer beater to pull Mt. Pleasant to within one point, 30-28 at the end of the third quarter.

The tide seemed to turn in the Oilers favor at the start of the fourth quarter when Western floor general, Mallory Sebald took a breather. The Oilers moved the ball up court quickly working it in for the scores. They also kept Western from moving the ball shutting down the Warrior offense. Then Ms. Sebald returned.

The spunky point guard spearheaded the Warrior attack. Breaking the man to man press with her dribble, she drove the land finding open teammates for easy twos or hitting the shot herself. The Oilers didn't find an answer to this as Western came away with a 47-44 win.

Western was led by Sara Boileau with 11 points. Courtney Grocholski added 10 with both Mallory Sebald and Jane Gillard adding 8.

Mt. Pleasant was paced by both Shiloh Tuma and Taylor Gibson who scored 10 points each. Hannah Maness added 8.
