Students driven by a lagging economy to return to school, Delta College is enjoying a record enrollment this semester.
There are 11,787 students enrolled for winter 2010 semester, taking courses equivalent to 108,064 credit hours.
Enrollment is up almost 800 students over the same semester of last year, and easily breaks the historic record of 11,367 posted in 1993.
The economy is playing a large role in this surge. "Across the nation community colleges are retraining America's workforce. People are retraining at Delta into second and third careers," said Trevor Kubatzke, Vice President of Student Services.
Students are choosing programs with good job potential, including all Health fields, Chemical Processing and the Alternative Energy/Wind Turbine Technician program to name a few.
Kubatzke noted that students aren't just coming for short-term retraining, "many people are returning to school for bachelor's degree transfer programs as well."
To help accommodate the record numbers, additional seats have been added to many classes.
Today, Delta College annually enrolls nearly 16,500 students, confers 1,500 graduates, and employs 900 staff and faculty members.
In addition to quality academic programs, Delta offers the region other learning opportunities through Quality Public Broadcasting, the Planetarium, Corporate Services and LifeLong Learning.
Since 1961, Delta College's educational efforts have significantly impacted the local economy. Of Delta's 46,600 alumni, 62 percent live in the Tri-Counties and 87 percent live in the state of Michigan.
