County commissioners Tuesday face a tough choice Tuesday.

Their task: pick a new county commissioner to replace former Commissioner Dawn Klida, now district judge.

The candidates:

  • Michael J. Buda, former mayor of Bay City and longtime civic activist;

  • Colleen Maillette, Bangor Township board member, Realtor and regional manager for the Do-All, Inc., retail operations;

  • Douglas Goupil, former industrial engineer, who has been involved in shipping computers to rural Kenya schools through Delta College; and

  • Lynne Moore, human resources specialist for Bangor Township Schools.

    Commissioners will have an easy choice deciding to oppose a move of the U.S. Post Office from downtown Bay City, as proposed by the Postal Service.

    And there doubtless will be euphoria in the chamber as the board accepts a $325,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for improvements to Pinconning Park. The total project amount is $587,665 and the Spicer Group of Saginaw is recommended as the design agent to scale back the project to meet the grant amount.

    The board also will consider authorizing Laura Ogar, director of Environmental Affairs and Community Development, to make application for Great Lakes grant funds targeting environmental/community restoration projects with the understanding that no general fund dollars will be used for match requirements.

    Commissioners are eying $475 million in the EPA budget to target the most significant problems in the region including invasive aquatic species, non-point source pollution, contaminated sediment and other "on-the-ground" projects.
