GOING GREEN

GO GREEN! I'm not talking about the Spartans (although I am a Spartan fan); I'm talking about the latest trend. Corporations and people alike are being more environmentally conscious. It is not only cool to recycle, but it is beneficial to our society as a whole. I decided to investigate Going Green in our own Tri-City area. I met with the Executive Director of the Midland Volunteers for Recycling Inc. Esther Seaver in Midland Michigan.
When I first pulled up to the center, a very large statue of a hand made out of recycled materials greeted me. It was really quite an artistic piece, really set the tone for my tour.

Esther graciously showed me around the facility, and filled me on the history of the establishment. Midland Volunteers for Recycling Inc. has been in Midland since 1987. Esther has been with the organization since 1991. Her life long commitment to recycling shows through her work. There were many volunteers helping her in her operation including her husband Brian who works at the recycling center as well. She said she is always willing to have more volunteers to help the cause.
I was very shocked to find all the services they offer to businesses and the general public.

There is a large industrial shredder where business and individuals can come shred all their important documents, no matter how large the quantity of materials may be. I will be going this up coming week to save our company a couple hundred dollars in shredder fees. No shredder company can beat the price of free. A trip from Bay City to Midland is well worth it.
Also they had moving boxes and wardrobe boxes for resale for only $1 to $2. They were in great condition. I had no idea I could find such things at a recycling center. And the best part is all the money earned goes right back into the non-profit organization to help better our own community.
As my tour continued, Esther started telling me about events Going Green in the Tri-City Area. She said Midland Volunteers for Recycling could come to any event, and make it environmentally friendly. Which in turn not only helps the community, but also keeps the price for trash removal down.
Speaking of costs for trash removal, Esther filled me in on a furniture store she knows who made the change and went Green. She told me that furniture store saved over 2 million dollars in one year by Going Green. That is enough evidence that Going Green is a win win situation for not only the environment, but for our wallets as well.
I enjoyed my tour at the center. I learned a lot about recycling, most importantly I have learned how to save money while doing it.

Great story for a great organization. I personally volunteered there as a past Midland city resident and it is "a good thing", easy volunteer oportunity (good one for parent and teens to do together, my girls worked with me) and a very worthwhile cause - Our Earth!
