Delta College is offering a wide variety of event and activities focusing on this year's theme of Latin American for its 23rd annual Global Awareness Program slated March 22-26.

All events are free and open to the community. For more information contact the Global Awareness Program at 989-686-9497.

Events scheduled are as follows:

Monday, March 22 - Wednesday, March 24

PBS video program "History of Latin Music," narrated by Jimmy Smits Ongoing from 9 am - 2 pm in N-008 (Conference room adjacent to the Commons)

LATIN MUSIC USA highlights the great American music created by Latinos, and celebrates the Latin rhythms at the heart of jazz, rock, country, and rhythm and blues. It's a fresh take on American musical history, reaching across five decades to portray the rich mix of sounds created by Latinos and embraced by all.

Monday, March 22

The Future of Haiti: Recovery & Development. What Can a Community Do? 10 am - 12 pm in the Lecture Theater (G160)

This opening session is a panel discussion focusing on grassroots response to the recovery and long term development of Haiti. The panel brings together community members willing to share ideas and explore ways we may be of help to each other in addressing the needs of this country.

Ecology & Ecotourism in Costa Rica, 12 - 2 pm in the Lecture Theater (G160)

Facilitators: Delta College Professors, Wendy Baker (Biology) and Connie Watson (Psychology)

Join us as we discuss the varied and beautiful geography of Costa Rica. Learn how to visit while helping the environment & economy of this special country. We will also discuss the educational opportunities available in Costa Rica from Learning Spanish to doing graduate research. In addition, find out how to save a sea turtle on your visit and take a ride on a zip line through the rain forest.

"Cracking the Maya Code", 12 - 2 pm in S-105

Facilitator: Delta College Professor, Sarah Smith (Sociology)

The ancient Maya civilization of Central America left behind a riddle: an intricate and mysterious hieroglyphic script carved on stone monuments and painted on pottery and bark books. Because the Spanish suppressed nearly all knowledge of how the script worked, unlocking its meaning posed one of archeology's fiercest challenges; Until Now.

This session explores how that riddle was solved. We will watch the NOVA episode "Cracking the Maya Code". After the video, we will do our own deciphering of Mayan hieroglyphs. Bring your lunch and experience the mystery.

"Secrets of the Lost Incan Empire" Film and Discussion 2 - 3:30 pm in S-111

Facilitators: Delta College Professor, Alan Hill (Sociology)

The Incas had no arch, no wheel, no codified mathematics or formal written language. How did they erect their magnificent citadels out of huge interlocking stones without mortar, iron tools or draft animals? This film follows a team of experts as they try to discover how the Incas did it.

Student Debate/Discussion: Corporate Social Responsibility in Latin America. Are They Really Responsible?, 2 - 3 pm in the Lecture Theater (G160)

Facilitators: Delta College Professors, Ski VanderLaan (Accounting)

What is the goal of a corporation? To make a profit? To be socially responsible? Or both? Intermediate Accounting students at Delta College explore what Corporate Social Responsibility means and try to find answers to these questions. This presentation is an informal debate and panel discussion about whether a corporation should be socially responsible or solely operates to make a profit.

Immigration Experience & Latin American Culture, 9 - 10 am in the Lecture Theater (G160)

Delta College Emeritus Professor, Santiago Peregrino

Santiago Peregrino, son of Mexican immigrant parents, puts a human face on the current Immigration Reform Issue by relating his parents' story; the circumstances which forced them to leave their homeland and come to the United States and their life in this country.

Catholic Influences in Latin American Culture, 10 - 11:30 am in the Lecture Theater (G160)

Father Daniel Roa, Associate Pastor, St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, Bay City, Christian Tabares, Deacon in Internship, Cathedral of St. Mary's of the Assumption, Saginaw

A Latino Catholic Priest and Deacon in Internship from the Saginaw Catholic Diocese will share and explain their perspective and insight on the historical factors that gave strength, force and perseverance to Catholicism in and out of Latin America. In addition, an explanation of how Spain's influence and historical conquest assisted the Catholic Church in assuming a critical role in shaping, promoting and attracting Latino?s towards Catholicism will also be offered. A question and answer period will follow.

Megan Leyva Unplugged - Singer/Musician, 12 - 1 pm in the Commons

Tejano Music Award Winner, Megan Leyva, began her Tejano Music career at just thirteen years old. It was at this very young age that she recorded her first CD demo with Hacienda Records. With a lot of hard work, determination, and the continuous support of her rising fan base -- Megan has been named one of Tejano Music?s Rising Female stars. Megan is a native of Croswell, Michigan and attained her Associates Degree for Pre-Psychology from St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron, Michigan.

Latin America and US: Immigration Issues, 2 - 4 pm in the Lecture Theater (G160)

Facilitator: Delta College Professor, Liz Ullrich (Political Science)

The members on this panel will discuss some of the causes and difficulties involved in immigration to the U.S. from Latin America. Panel members include: Santiago Peregrino, Delta College Emeritus Professor; Dawn Wise, Immigration & Nationality Law, Law Offices of Irani & Wise, PLC; Carolyn Krieger, Immigration Staff Attorney, Center for Civil Justice; Natalie Marzonie, Coordinator of Multicultural Ministry, Saginaw Catholic Diocese

"American Harvest" Film and Discussion 4 - 6 pm in the Lecture Theater (G160) Facilitator: Delta College Professor, Liz Ullrich (Political Science) Nonpartisan documentary examines immigration and your kitchen table. American Harvest attempts to shed light on the changing face of the United States in particular as it relates to Agriculture. This film also points out the flaws and inconsistencies of the current U.S. policy on immigration. The filmmakers follow both legal and illegal farm workers and the farmers caught in the middle of a flawed immigration policy. What We Didn't Learn: Sustainability & History in Latin America, 10 - 11 am in the Lecture Theater (G160)

Facilitators: Delta College Professors, Charissa Urbano (Biology) and Mike Finelli (Residential Construction)

The presenters will provide an overview of the factors that influence success or failure of societies based on award winning author Jared Diamond's extensive analysis of ecology, social science and history. How have issues related to sustainability influenced the fate of Mayan civilizations, Haiti and the Dominican Republic? What can with do with this knowledge today? GAP 2010 - Sustainability Joint Session

In his Pulitzer Prize winning bestseller Guns, Germs and Steel, Jared Diamond examined how and why Western civilization developed the technology and immunities that allowed them to dominate much of the world. In his best-seller, Collapse, Diamond probes the other side of the equation: What caused some of the great civilizations of the past to collapse into ruin and what can we learn from their fate?

Sports in Latin American Culture, 2 - 3 pm in the Lecture Theater (G160)

Delta College Professor, Renee Hoppe (Lifelong Wellness), Delta College Men's Soccer Coach, Rodrigo (Ricco) Barassi

Join us in a lively discussion about sports in Latin America and how these sports have created opportunities for many individuals. You will have the opportunity to hear from Latin American students who have been influenced by sports and how it has impacted their lives.

"CRUDE" Film and Discussion, 6:30 - 8:30 pm in the Lecture Theater (G160)

Facilitator: Delta College Professor, Stephanie Baiyasi (Biology)

A winner of 20 film awards, including "Best Documentary of the Year" by the National Board of Review, Crude is the epic story of one of the largest and most controversial environmental lawsuits on the planet. The landmark case takes place in the Amazon jungle of Ecuador, pitting 30,000 indigenous and colonial rainforest dwellers against the US oil giant, Chevron. The claim is that Texaco/Chevron spent three decades systematically contaminating the region, creating a "death zone" in an area the size of Rhode Island, resulting in increased rates of cancer, leukemia, birth defects, and other ailments. Chevron fights back.
