The group performs a wide range of music, ranging from Motown, Classic Rock, Jazz, and traditional Calypso steel band tunes. The Steelers have been very well received by the Bay area community.

The Bay City Steelers steel drum band was established in the spring of 2008 under the direction of Scott Brown. It is made up of high school music students from Bay City and Saginaw area schools.

The steel drum or steel pan originated in the islands Trinidad & Tobago in 1946. Ellie Manette. "The father of the modern steel drum instrument", is recognized as the principal developer and innovator of the steel drum. As a youth, he fabricated the instruments from discarded 55 gallon steel oil drums from WWII.

Since its creation, the steel drums have grown to a family of nine and comprise the only complete orchestral family created in the twentieth century. The voices produced by these instruments range from soprano to bass. Steel pans are made by hammering the oil barrel's end surface into a concave shape, and several areas are outlined by chiseled grooves.

The surface is heated and tempered, and domes are hammered into the outlined areas. The depth, curvature, and size of each dome determine its pitch. The larger the dome, the lower the pitch; just as is, the smaller the dome, the higher the pitch. The barrels side, or "skirt" is cut off at the proper length and a hole is drilled on either side to hang the drum on a stand with wire or rope.

The pan maker then uses a tuning device to hammer each note to its correct pitch, often tuning each note several times before the whole pan is fully "blended" together. Finally, the finished pans are either painted in any desired color or are dipped in chrome to make them shine like silver.

Recent appearances include: the Riverside Art Festival; the Bay City Country Club; the Riverside Friendship Senior Center; the Saginaw Bay Yacht Club; the Pig Gig; the Third Street Waterfall Park "Friday at the Falls" concert series; YWCA Unity Picnic; the unveiling of the new State Theatre marquee; the Dobson Antique Fire Truck & Toy Museum Open House.

As well, the Steelers have performed at private graduation parties, wedding receptions, and various Bay City public school events.

The Steelers director, Scott Brown, attends Alma College where he is majoring in Music Education and Music Performance. He has been playing steel drums for 10 years where much of his college education has focused on the steel pan.

Performing with the Alma College Percussion Ensemble/Steel Band, he has played across the country at various Jazz festivals including: the 2006, 2007, & 2008 Annual Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival; the 2007 Michigan Music Conference performance at DeVos Hall; the 2007 Centrum Jazz Festival in Port Townsend, Washington (with guest performer Joe Locke); main stage performances at the 2004 & 2005 Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival and the 2005 Great Events Series at Michigan Technological University.
