Australia Next Stop for Fast-Rising Pro Basketball Star Eric Devendorf
Bay City Flash to Leave New Zealand, Signs with Melbourne Tigers
Devendorf has signed to play for the Melbourne Tigers of the Australian NBL in the 2010-11 season.
Eric Devendorf, currently starring in the New Zealand National Basketball League, has signed to play for the Melbourne Tigers of the Australian NBL in the 2010-11 season.
According to the Herald Sun of Australia, Devendorf was one of three players signed for next year by the Tigers. Also signed were two native Aussies, former University of Utah player Luke Nevill, a 7-foot-2 center from Perth, and former St. Mary's player Lucas Walker, from Launceston.
The Adelaide Advertiser reported: "From Michigan, Devendorf, 194cm and 23, currently is tearing up the NZ NBL and once was touted as a serious NBA prospect."
"Devendorf is an exciting talent who was a four-year starter at Syracuse University," Tigers coach Al Westover said. "He is a great athlete and will play as a combo guard in the two spot, and also play in the point if needed."
Devendorf is currently with the Wellington Saints of New Zealand's NBL. He left Syracuse University after three controversial years, hoping to be drafted by the NBA or at least catch on with a NBA "D" League team.
He played a few games with the Reno Bighorns, becoming on Dec. 26, 2009 the first Bay Cityan ever to play basketball professionally. Devendorf played 14 minutes 33 seconds in his professional debut for the Reno Bighorns on Saturday night, the same day the team announced his signing.
Devendorf got on the board with two points, an assist and a defensive rebound to help the Bighorns (now 6-5) defeat the Tulsa 66ers 102-87 before 1,748 fans at the Reno Events Center.
A news release stated: "Bighorns Sign Syracuse Star Devendorf. The Reno Bighorns have signed 6-4 guard Eric Devendorf out of Syracuse University, the team announced Saturday, Dec. 26. Devendorf will be activated for tonight's game."
He scored 11 points against the Idaho Stampede on New Years Day but was waived before the Jan. 4 game, apparently because an injured player he had replaced returned. Devendorf played three games for the NBA Development League team and averaged 4.7 points and 11.8 minutes per game.
The Melbourne Herald-Sun wrote: "Devendorf, who can fill the basket from long range, comes with his share of off-court conflict and controversy.
"Having hit more than 30 points twice in his sophomore college season with Syracuse, Devendorf, 23, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament as a junior and the next year was suspended from school for allegedly striking a female student.
"He scored 49 points on debut for Waikato Pistons in the New Zealand NBL this year, then signed with Wellington Saints and is averaging 26.1 ppg."
