The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy is accepting entries for its annual Nature Photography Contest. The photo contest is designed to provide people of all ages an opportunity to explore the natural environment within the Saginaw Basin while building awareness and support to preserve and protect the natural spaces, species and habitat that thrive within the Saginaw Bay Watershed.

Sponsored by Consumers Energy, the contest theme is 'Picture Your World: Explore the Natural Beauty of the Saginaw Bay Watershed.' Photo contestants are encouraged to capture an image that reflects living in the Saginaw Bay Watershed. Images can include waterways such as rivers and streams, plant life or flora, forest and natural wooded scenery, wildlife, birds and insects, and even people interacting with nature.

The photo contest has gained in popularity since its introduction in 2007. The first photo contest received 94 submissions; in 2009 there were 182 photos submitted, with more than twenty students entering the contest.

The Saginaw Bay Watershed is the largest watershed in the state of Michigan filtering 15% of Michigan's inland waters. It contributes cleaner water to the Huron Bay, the Great Lakes, and is the largest contiguous freshwater coastal wetlands system in the United States. Featuring more than 175 inland lakes and nearly 7,000 square miles of rivers and streams, this unique watershed is home to a variety of waterfowl, birds, snakes, turtles, amphibians, and more than 138 endangered or threatened species.

The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy Nature Photography Contest is open to the public. There is no entry fee. Cash prizes of $50, $25, and $10 respectively, will be awarded to the top three winners in each photo category being offered. In addition, winning photos will be posted on the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy website as well as in the organization's newsletter, 'The Watershed Wire.'

In the past, contestants could choose from four photo categories: Landscapes; Plants and Flowers; Wildlife; and People and Nature.

This year, a new category was added: Photo Art. This category allows participants to enter photographs that have been digitally enhanced and edited. There is also a special category for students.

"The contest is intended to promote the beauty of natural areas and help us better appreciate the value of the resources that surround us." said Valerie Roof, executive director of the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy. "Any way you look at it, this is great learning opportunity for anyone who wants to explore the natural wonders that lie within the Saginaw Basin."

Photos entered in the contest will judged by a select panel of professionals with backgrounds in environmental protection, art and photography. Photos will be judged on originality, composition and subject matter. Special consideration will be given to photos taken on Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy Nature preserves; directions to which can be found at www.sblc-mi.org.

To enter the contest contact the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy at (989) 891-9986 or download the entry form and contest rules by visiting the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy website at www.sblc-mi.org. Deadline for photo submission is September 30, 2010. Anyone with questions should contact the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy.

The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy helps maintain the quality of life in the Saginaw Bay Watershed through the preservation of important wetlands, waterways and land of all types. The Conservancy is a non-profit charitable organization working in the Saginaw Basin. To date, the Conservancy has protected more than 5,500 acres.
