Why Tom Izzo SHOULD NOT Leave Michigan State to Coach Pros at Cleveland
Too Many Potential Problems in the Big League for a 55-Year-Old Coach
Tom Izzo can stay at Michigan State until he's 70, if he even wins only half his games.
Ask yourself: Why would Tom Izzo leave Michigan State?
He makes $3 million a year.
He has a chance to win another national championship next year.
He won't know for sure whether LeBron James will stay with the Cleveland Cavaliers next year until July 1.
Even if James stays, Izzo's chances of making it big in the pros are limited; it's just too tough a league and money rules. Cleveland can't match LA, NY, Chicago, etc. Even with James, they wouldn't have the supporting cast to match the big boys.
Izzo at Cleveland would make about twice what he gets now, about $6 million a year, but taxes will take most of the increase. Plus he has to pay MSU back $500,000 if he dumps a contract good until 2016. I don't care what your bank account is, that's a big hunk of change.
But, most of all, he is 55 years old!
Do you really think a 55-year-old coach -- no matter how good he is -- can overcome all the obstacles to become a top coach in the pros. NOPE, NOPE, and NOPE!
Izzo can stay at Michigan State until he's 70, if he even wins only half his games. If he comes up short at Cleveland, he's toast in a few years. He'll be 60 and out, and tagged a loser for life.
Plus, all the Green and White faithful -- who love him now -- will curse his name to eternity. And who wants such a legacy?
There are ex football coaches whose name cannot be mentioned in polite company in Lansing who are in that category. Coaches who went to LSU and then to Alabama. Coaches who had better not visit the campus again. You know who I mean.
It's not all money. It's adulation. It's pep rallies to encourage the coach to stay. It's prep stars who won't come to MSU if Coach Izzo is not there. It's -- well, you get the idea.
Why has Coach K never left Duke? Why did Jud Heathcote never leave MSU? Why did John Wooden stay a quarter century at UCLA, never making more than $35K a year, turning down 10 times more to coach the LA Lakers? Think about it: WHY?
If you go from being a legend to being a money-grubber, you lose. Tom Izzo knows that; and that's why he won't leave.
Tom Izzo is, above all, a principled man. He cannot betray that and cause his fans and his players to lose confidence in him.
If 10 or 15 years he can fade away with his reputation intact. Why take a chance on LeBron and the vagaries of the pro league?
Why become one of the crowd when you are on top now and will no doubt stay there, at $3 million a year, plus, if you win or lose?
