The South End Citizens District Council (SECDC) will conduct political candidate forums June 23 & 24 from 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. at the Bay County Child and Senior Center, 1001 Marsac (Corner of Broadway and Fremont).

SECDC Chairman Thomas Baird will serve as the moderator both evenings for the group's fourth pre-election forum.

He is seeking questions for the candidates from the public.

Chairman Baird says that the council is offering this community function to the residents of Bay County to offer them the opportunity of getting to know the candidates better.

Baird stated "For the first time in many years we have been offered several good choices for the vacancies in our Court system. We also will have to make several selections in our State and Federal government offices to lead us for the next few years. These will be very important decisions for us to make."

Wednesday's forum will feature candidates for the 96th State Representative, 31st State Senate and 5th District Congressional seats.

Eleven of the 12 candidates filing with the Secretary of State for the contested offices have confirmed they will be in attendance.

U.S. Rep. Dale F. Kildee, D-Flint, will be in session in Washington D.C. and his campaign staff has indicated that the Congressman will submit an opening statement and answers to two questions submitted to him.

In attendance will be candidates for Mr. Kildee's seat, Republicans Rick Wilson and John Kupiec, both of Grand Blanc, and Democrat Scott L. Withers Jr. of Vassar.

The candidates for the 31st State Senate vacancy on hand will be current State Representative Jeff Mayes, Bay City Democrat, and Republicans Mike Green, of Mayville, Paul Mezo, of Sandusky, Gary Hadden and Robert Palmer, both of Bay City.

Three candidates vying for the the 96th State Representative post are Democrats Brian Elder and Charles Brunner, both of Bay City, and Republican Dennis Poirier of Essexville.

The second evening of the "Candidate Forum" will feature judicial races in Bay County which are being contested for the first time in many years.

The 74th District Court has two vacancies with one race uncontested and the other with five candidates. Both are nonpartisan contests.

The uncontested race with incumbent District Judge Dawn Klida who will not be able to attend because of a previous commitment.

Five local attorneys will be vying for the other spot on the 74th District Court. According to Mr. Baird, the following have confirmed that they will be in attendance on June 24: Jennifer Barnes, Mark Janer, Eric Zimostrad, Steven Jacobs and Abel Torres.

Also the 18th Circuit Court will have a vacancy with two local local attorneys vying for that position, Harry Gill and Darrin Nichols.

The format for both evenings will be the same and consist of two minute opening statements. The candidates then will have an opportunity respond to two questions that have been presented to them prior to the "Forum."

These questions and all of the questions presented to them during the "Forum" will be limited to 90 second responses.

South End Citizens District Council Chairman Thomas A. Baird will serve as moderator and Magen Trask also from the South End CDC will serve as the timekeeper.

After the opening two questions the candidates will be asked questions that have been submitted from the public. They again will 90 seconds for their responses to questions that they have not seen.

The moderator of the event is still seeking questions that could be used in the "Forum" be submitted to him up until June 21 at the following: baycityump@yahoo.com. Please include a name and telephone number to Mr. Baird to verify any concerns about the questions submitted.

Both evenings will conclude with closing statements beginning at 9 p.m. from each candidate limited to two minutes. Refreshments and light snacks will be served both nights.

The "Candidate Forums" are open to the public. We have hosted these forums three times previously and have been very successful and we have had virtually 100 percent attendance by the candidates. This is very exciting for me personally and should provide the residents a good opportunity to learn more about all of the candidates."
