20 Million Americans Avoid Dentist Because of Anxiety

I'm sure most people have heard the old dental quote, "We Cater to Cowards."

This is because dentists understand that many people are anxious about going to the dentist. In fact, according to the National Institute of Health, more than 20 million Americans avoid going to the dentist because of fear.

The reason for the anxiety varies including a fear of shots or a concern about the procedure itself. Sometimes a negative past experience may play a role in why a person might avoid a dental office.

If you are one of those 20 million, here are some tips to help you through that next dental visit.

  • Ensure open communication. At your first appointment, be open and honest about your fears. This will help you and your doctor create solutions to ease your worries.
  • Ask questions. Knowledge is your greatest defense so it is good to be informed of what to expect. Take time to read the literature given and ask questions.
  • Try to avoid caffeine. As a stimulant caffeine can escalate anxiety.
  • Breathe. During the procedure, focus on breathing regularly and slowly. When nervous some tend to hold their breath, which decreases oxygen levels and further increases feelings of anxiety.
  • Distract Yourself. One in five people say the noises made by dental instruments frighten them. A simple solution is to bring a portable music device with headphones to each appointment or ask your dental professional to play soothing music during the procedure.

We are here to care for your dental needs in a calm and comforting environment. So, don't be afraid. Give us a call today.

Our friendly staff will help you schedule your first appointment. We look forward to serving you.
