RAIN BARRELS = SAVING MONEY AND WATER

Want to save money and help the environment? Lawn and garden watering make up nearly 40% of total household water use during the summer. In an average rain storm, more than 700 gallons of water run off the roof of a typical home. (That's enough water to take 17 baths or 58 showers!)

A rain barrel can save homeowners about 1,300 gallons of water during peak summer months, and the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy is pleased to announce it is coordinating a one-day rain barrel distribution event on Saturday, July 24. The 55-gallon ENVIRO Rain Barrel will be available to area residents on a first come, first served basis for only $54.00, tax included.

The sale runs from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and will be held at the EMCOR parking lot at Valley Center Tech Park off US 10 at Mackinaw Rd. exit; (2 miles West of US10 & I-75 interchange), 5154 Alliance Drive, Bay City.

Using rain barrels can help you save on your water bills while helping to protect our water quality. Rain barrel use reduces rainwater run-off that carries sediments, grease, pesticides and fertilizers into local waterways. Rain barrel use also reduces soil erosion and improves the ability of rainwater to infiltrate soil at a reduced intensity.

"The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy preserves land every day to help protect our water quality. Coordinating this sale is one way we offer the public an opportunity to be part of the solution of protecting and improving the quality of water in our rivers, streams and lakes," said Valerie S. Roof, executive director.
