Memories of Tall Ship 2006
By Dot Rifenbark
Hometown Poet

They sailed into our harbor on a sultry summer day
As we stood on the banks of the Saginaw Bay

Twelve ships and their crews they sailed right on in
The Royaliste and the Picton Castle round the world they had been

The people all cheered as the skilled captains steered
The reflections of the ships in the water were mirrored

The bosuns and the first mates of the crews they waved
And the people responded with applause for the brave

Their caps they waved high above their suntanned heads
The townsfolk were attired in whites blues and reds

The good feeling of patriotic pride it took hold
As the people beheld the crews courageous and bold

They had traveled from far to our old harbor town
Such happiness prevailed there was nary a frown

On the faces of the young and on the faces of the old
As they watched in wonder below decks was their load

The cannons they fired with booms oh so loud
As crews saluted the happy folks in the crowd

That stood on the shoreline in awe and in wonder
And the seagulls o'er head flew high not asunder

Local Boy Scouts sold hot dogs and sodas and chips
Amid the crowd that stood in awe of the tall ships

It was Christmas and Easter and Fourth of July all in one
As suddenly through the fog came the glorious sun

A big cheer went up from the folks in the crowd
As another cannon boomed so clear and so loud

The ships continued their journey on down the river
Till they reached the docks and tied up with a shiver

They docked on the east side as well as the west
Having reached their destination it was time for a rest

Their travels had taken them so very far
They had journeyed by sunlight as well as by stars

Their long-awaited arrival was met with applause
The welcome committee had championed the cause

Of bringing them to our town one more time
To miss out on the fun t'would be such a crime

I recalled the days of my long ago childhood
With Dad beside me on these banks stood

He was an old Navy man himself you see
And served in World War II back in 1943

He taught me to appreciate the waters of Michigan
And on that day I felt just like a kid again

All too soon it was time for the "Anchors aweigh!"
I was sorry to see them in four days sail away

Back out to the Saginaw Bay from whence they came
On out to Lake Huron traveling ancient routes the same

I thanked them all for coming to our town
And hoped one day they'd come back around

Till then I'll have memories that I'll call to mind
Whenever I need them and their stories sublime
