Nathan Weidner was a young child full of compassion who died a tragic death and left this world far too early. Nathan was exceptional in many respects.

One of his most outstanding personality traits was his ability to draw children to him who were less fortunate and help them in any way he could. Nathan himself was just a young child and his caring for other children left those who knew him realize he was indeed a very exceptional, special young boy.

The foundation was formed in 1995 to honor him by friends of the Weidner family and to continue Nathan's efforts to help those in need: the economically disadvantaged, abused and neglected children of Bay County. The foundation runs completely by volunteers and all funds raised stay in the community.

The foundation has three main objectives. First, it provides scholarships for the seven Bay County Schools, including alternative education. To date, the foundation has given over 100 two-year renewable scholarships to Delta College, a total of over $220,000.00.

The foundation gives ten students attending Delta College this scholarship. The goal is to reach the average student who may not receive scholarships for their grades or financial aid. Second, the Nathan Weidner Foundation contributes to the Nathan Weidner Children's Advocacy Center, established in May of 2000.

This center provides prevention and intervention programs to prevent child abuse and neglect. It aides about 2,000 abused children per year. The third objective of the foundation is to provide a home for abused children. It provides shelter and aids neglected and abused children who may not have a place to go for a warm meal and acts of kindness that every child is entitled to experience.

The foundation is proud of all scholarship winners and would like to share what winning this scholarship means to some of the recipients:

2007 scholarship winner Travis Zamora is pursuing a degree in dentistry and transferring to the University of Michigan next fall to finish his degree. "Getting this award made me second think everything, knowing people trusted me and believed in what I was doing was a good feeling."

2005 scholarship winner Ashley Everitt is working on her degree in Nursing. "My family wasn't financially prepared to help me with the expenses of college and winning this scholarship has enabled me to continue my education. After winning this scholarship, I was so grateful of their generosity my mom and I decided to join the foundation. This was our way of giving back to such a great organization for all they have done for us and all of the scholarship winners."

2004 scholarship winner Amy Bissonnette received her Associates Degree in Nursing, her sister Lisa Bissonnette won in 2007 and is working on a double Bachelors degree in Biology and Chemistry. "Without the help of this scholarship it would have taken both of us much longer to get our degrees."

1998 scholarship winner Martha Fitzpatrick (Drzewicki) received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. "I was an average student and thankful in getting this scholarship to help with my college education. I knew I was attending Delta College my first two years of college and appreciated a local scholarship foundation who acknowledged students going there."

The main fundraiser is the Annual Chicken BBQ Dinner at Veteran's Memorial Park in Bay City on Sunday, August 1st from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. This event features a great family picnic atmosphere and there is something for everyone to do. Arts & Craft Merchants, Bingo, Raffles, Clowns, Silent Auction, Children's Play Area, Face Painting, Moon Walk, Train Ride, Door Prizes, Car Show, Motorcycle Poker Run, Live entertainment by Howard the Duck DJ, TC Chix and Bob Bloenk.



Cost of the dinner is $9.00 each (Dine in or Take Out) for a fabulous charcoal BBQ chicken dinner with homemade French Fries, Baked Beans, Watermelon, Coleslaw and Soda. Children 6 & under are FREE!
