Summer is winding down but there is still plenty of time to wet a fishing line and participate in Michigan's great outdoors.

Pike, bass, bluegills and perch are still the "catch of the day."

Below:(Left) MyBayCity's O.J. Cunninghamholds up a barely legal northern pike taken on a Johnson's Silver Minnow with a trailing green and white Uncle Josh's Pork rind. (Right) Kawkawlin's Dan Schmidt shows off one of many largemouth bass "keepers" taken during a days fishing on a small lake in Northeastern lower Michigan.

Here's a recent fishing report for Michigan's Northeastern Lower Peninsula.

From Rogers City to Presque Isle, fishing was slow due to strong winds blowing warm water into both ports. Water temperatures have been up to 63 degrees in 120 feet of water, making most boats head out to deeper waters. Light numbers of chinook and pink salmon along with steelhead and brown trout have been caught 65 to 100 feet down in waters up to 180 feet deep. The colors of green, blues and silver have worked best. An occasional walleye has also been caught.

At Rockport, good numbers of lake trout have been caught around Middle Island and the Nordmeer wreck. Chinook and pink salmon have also been caught. Squid and spoons in light green or chartreuseworked best. Anglers are targeting the waters between Stoneport and False Presque Isle for brown trout and lake trout. Alpena anglers are fishing around the Nordmeer wreck, North Point and the Nine Mile Can for chinook, lake trout and steelhead. Brown trout have been caught in shallow waters around Sulphur Island and Scare Crow Island.

Inland, northwest and southeast winds have slowed the fishing in Grand Lake. Smallmouth bass can still be found in the Southeast Bay, northwest of Grass Island, and northwest of East Bay on spinners, crank baits, minnows, crawlers, tubes and top-water jigs. The number of walleye caught has decreased with only a few fish caught when trolling or drifting crawler harnesses near the County Park and northwest of Grass Island. Northern pike have been caught northwest of Duck Hunt Island and in Tony's Bay on crawlers and crank baits. Yellow perch have been caught in the North Bay and the Southeast Bay in the grassy area.

Near Oscoda, lake trout continue to bite, but the salmon fishing was slow. Walleye have been caught near the mouth of the Au Sable River when drifting or trolling crawler harnesses. The Trico fly hatch is ongoing on the Main Branch and the North Branch of the Au Sable River. A few walleye have been caught on crawlers. At Tawas, salmon and trout fishing did pick up near Au Sable Point in 40 to 70 feet of water near Buoy #2. Walleye anglers did fair on Rapalas and crawler harnesses in 18 to 25 feet of water near Buoys 2 and 4. Walleye have been caught near Alabaster. Pier fishing in Tawas Bay has been generally slow, but anglers have caught light numbers of smallmouth and rock bass. At Au Gres, anglers are marking good numbers of perch out near the Shipping Channel, but the bite was slow. Walleye action was slow to fair in 20 to 35 feet of water. Shore anglers are catching freshwater drum and catfish in the Lower Au Gres River.

Inland, anglers on Houghton Lake are fishing straight out from the marina and catching walleye, northern pike, bluegill, crappie and perch on crawlers and leeches. On Higgins Lake, anglers are fishing for perch, but catching more rock bass. Smallmouth bass are hitting on crayfish along the drop-offs. Lake trout have been caught when trolling with cowbells and shiners in 80 to 100 feet of water.
