Fogerty Classic Song Inducted Int MLB Hall of Fame
There's a tear in my eye today for the strangest of reasons.
John Fogerty's "Centerfield" song is being inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame today at Cooperstown, New York.
Imagine that. A
song getting inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame.
Since I heard about it, I've been playing the song via "youtube" all morning and my wife just sent me into my basement office cuz she's "gonna go off the deep end if she has to hear it one more time."
Every time I play the video and listen to the lyrics, I start tearing up a little and get all emotional. Ahhhhhh . . . baseball in the 1950s and 1960s . . . "When It Was A Game."
Click Here and You Can Listen, too. And the lyrics are right below so you can sing along until
YOUR wife sends you to the basement.
Well, beat the drum and hold the phone - the sun came out today!
We're born again, there's new grass on the field.!
A-roundin' third, and headed for home, it's a brown-eyed handsome man;!
Anyone can understand the way I feel.
CHORUS:
Oh, put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Look at me, I can be Centerfield.
Well, I spent some time in the Mudville Nine,
watchin' it from the bench;
You know I took some lumps when the Mighty Casey struck out.
So Say Hey Willie, tell Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio;
Don't say "it ain't so", you know the time is now.
CHORUS
Yeah! I got it, I got it!
Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes;
You know I think it's time to give this game a ride.
Just to hit the ball and touch 'em all - a moment in the sun;
(pop) It's gone and you can tell that one goodbye!
In the first 10-15 seconds of the video, there are pics of all the greats from days gone by -- Roberto Clemente, Al Kaline, Yaz, Frank Robinson, Duke Snider, Pete Rose, Stargell, Throneberry, Hank Aaron, Willy Mays, Colovito, Ted Williams, Lou Brock, Larry Doby and of course, Mickey Mantle.
There are other baseball songs that are almost as popular as "Centerfield," but have not been considered for Hall of Fame induction.
Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days" comes to mind. There's "Joltin' Joe DiMaggio . . . We want You On Our Side" as well as Abbot and Costello's "Who's on First."
But nothing compares to Harry Carey singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the 7th Inning Stretch at a Chicago Cubs baseball game.
