Old-fashioned Pig Roast Saturday, August 21, 2010

The Frankenmuth Farmers Market (FFM) is honored to partner with Zehnder's Restaurant of Frankenmuth for an old-fashioned Pig Roast Saturday, August 21, 2010.

Zehnder's is generously donating an entire roasted pig for this fundraising event. From 11am-1:30pm, for only $7.50 with all proceeds benefiting the Market, visitors can feast on Frankenmuth's finest roasted pork sandwiches slathered with artisan sauces sold by Market producers, fresh and local corn-on-the-cob from Market farmers, Zehnder's cole slaw (the restaurant's most requested recipe!), a beverage, and also dessert provided by 4-H.

A 'Pig Parade' at 10:45am will transport the roasted pork from nearby Zehnder's Restaurant to the Market. One of Zehnder's specialties and a regional delicacy, the pork is slow-roasted at a low temperature until falling from the bone and fork-tender. The hog will be locally raised, purchased from Bernthal's Packing. The pork sandwiches can be dressed up with sauces donated by FFM producers, including Uncle Bob's Smokey Mountain Sauce and Sansonetti's Michigan Maple BBQ Sauce. Both vendors will also be sampling and selling their full line-up of sauces, made in East Tawas and Holly.

Reports Chef John Zehnder, CEC, ACE, AAC, "In this day of over-processed and additive added foods, Farmer's Markets play an important role in educating people about alternative healthy options like fresh picked, organic and heirloom produce available only during our short summer season. We all need to pay more attention to healthier eating habits.

That's why here at Zehnder's we enthusiastically support the Frankenmuth Farmer's Market." Eagerly partnering with the Market to enhance our region's enjoyment of local food, Zehnder's is generously donating the pork, cole slaw, freshly baked sandwich buns, utensils, and much more. Proceeds will be used to strengthen the Market?s many positive impacts on the community, economy, social well-being, sustainable food system, and environment in our region.

On the same day, the Market will also host its third-Saturday-of-the-month 'Harvest for the Hungry,' a food drive for Hidden Harvest which collected over 6,000 pounds of fresh produce, garden surplus, and pantry items in 2009 donated by visitors. The Frankenmuth Area Fine Arts council is also hosting its Art Fair On Main in Eddie Zehnder Park from 10am to 5pm with art, music, demonstrations, and more.

The FFM operates 8am-2pm Saturdays through October 17, 2010 next to the Harvest Coffeehouse, 626 S. Main Street in downtown Frankenmuth, and also offers a temporary 4-7pm Wednesday Market at Covenant MedExpress at 600 N. Main Street through August or until the harvest allows.

Named one of ten 'must see' markets in Michigan by Michigan Travel Ideas magazine, the Frankenmuth Farmers Market offers weekly email newsletters (email dbronner@chartermi.net), and will again partner with Zehnder's on September 23, 2010 for a 'Feast of the Harvest Moon.' A two-weekend Christkindlmarkt will be offered November 26-28 and December 3-5, 2010

The Frankenmuth Credit Union sponsors music at the Market, and more information can be found at www.frankenmuthfarmersmarket.org.
