Feast of the Harvest Moon
Thursday, September 23, 2010

The Frankenmuth Farmers Market (FFM) is thrilled to partner with Zehnder's Restaurant of Frankenmuth to offer an exquisite event for all the senses - The Feast of the Harvest Moon!

Coinciding with the full moon occurring on the Autumn Equinox of Thursday, September 23, 2010 - hence a true Feast of the Harvest Moon - the event will feature a six-course local foods dinner, live local music, local art auction featuring artwork of local farm scenes, and guest speaker Chris Bedford, President of the Center for Economic Security which works to foster food security across the state.

A 6pm social hour will be followed by dinner at 6:30pm.

Tickets are limited and cost $75 per person or $500 per table of eight. Tickets are on sale now by contacting Market Mistress Laurajeanne Kehn at (989)295-9766 or kehn@speednetllc.com. Last year's similar "Festive Seasonings" dinner was a sold-out success.

Executive Chef John Zehnder, CEC, ACE, AAC, explains his inspiration for the Market meal: "Over the centuries, equinoxes and full moons have played a defining role in the history and customs of most civilizations. September 23, 2010 is the autumn equinox - the start of fall when day and night are of equal lengths. The full moon visible this night is called the 'harvest moon.'

When an equinox and full moon occur on the same day, this is an event of legends and folklore! We will celebrate our blessings and the success of our Frankenmuth Farmers Market. There will be no finer dinner served in the state of Michigan that evening. Local, sustainable agriculture and a return to basics are where we need to go in the U.S. if we're going to have a safe and nutritious food supply." Zehnder's is generously donating all proceeds of the event to the Market.

Highlights of the six-course meal include: Curried Butternut Squash Bisque Shooters, Wild Mushroom Strudel with Raspberry Coulis, "Big Bird" Salad with Cherry Bomb Vinaigrette, Beef Short Ribs on Cassoulet with Cauliflower Soufflé, Honeycrisp Apple Pie a la mode, Fair Trade Ivory Coast Chocolates, and Dizzy Daisy Cherry Wine. A cash bar and passed appetizers will be available during the social hour.

The evening's speaker, Christopher Bedford, works to bring ecological intelligence to business, public health and environmental groups. His award winning film, "The Next Industrial Revolution" has helped revolutionize the green movement in business worldwide. Mr. Bedford has worked to build ecological sustainability in five states and also served on the Michigan Farmers Market Association charter board of directors.

Named one of the state's ten "must see" markets by Michigan Travel Ideas magazine, the Frankenmuth Farmers Market operates 9am-2pm Saturdays through October 16 next to Harvest Coffeehouse, 626 S. Main Street in downtown Frankenmuth, and offers a 4-7pm Wednesday Market at Covenant MedExpress at 600 N. Main Street through September 15, 2010.

On September 18 and October 16, 2010 the Market will host its third-Saturday-of-the-month "Harvest for the Hungry," a food drive for Hidden Harvest which collected over 6,000 pounds of fresh produce, garden surplus, and pantry items in 2009. A Christkindlmarkt will run November 26-28 and December 3-5, 2010.

The Frankenmuth Credit Union sponsors music at the Market, and more information can be found at www.frankenmuthfarmersmarket.org. To receive the Market's weekly email newsletter, please email kehn@speednetllc.com.
