It "coulda" been . . . It "shoulds" been a miracle.
Jimmy Clausen . . . Where were you?
When Dayne Crist's final pass of the Notre Dame - Michigan game floated high into the cheap* seats at Notre Dame Stadium, I was looking at the eyes of the Wolverine defenders and the Irish receivers.
Everyone was looking "UP" . . . Way "UP" . . . "UP in disbelief that this final attempt was so overthrown and so far out of reach of any potential touchdown reception.
This ND/MICH game had the all the ingredients for an Irish miracle finish. Every Notre Dame "hater" knew in their heart of hearts that the Irish would win on the final play of the game.
For God's sake, man . . . There was a rainbow.
There was even a cheap "roughing" call on the last out-of-bounds tackle to get the Irish down to the 25 and within reach of victory . . . I was pacing . . . Everything was in place for the kind of win of which legends are created.
In my Freshman year (1961) at ND, I saw my first Notre Dame "miracle" that ended with a win on the final play of regulation. In that game, a 41-yarder field goal by Joe Perkowski beat Syracuse. (17-15).
I have to add that Perkowski missed his first field goal attempt as the clock ran out but a "roughing the holder" call gave Perkowski and the Irish another try with no time on the clock. Perkowski didn't miss the 2nd opportunity.
South Bend Tribune newspaper headlines blared "IRISH WIN IN FIFTH PERIOD 17-15"
Here's the video . . . no audio . . . of the 1961 miracle finish.
By the way, the QB (2) was Frank Budka . . . who?
There is a lot of footage at the end of the game that shows students running onto the field in celebration. I know I'm in there. If you can find me in the footage . . . Let me know . . . 'Cuz I've been looking at the video piece for about an hour without any luck.
You know the Irish were the better team on Saturday against Michigan . . . I know you do . . .
