The Tri City Icehawks dropped a pair of contests to the Ft. Wayne Federals last weekend.

The short-handed Icehawks fell to Ft. Wayne 14-0 on Saturday night at the Bay County Civic Arena and did much better in a Sunday noon match, while still losing 8-2.

"Both teams were shorthanded but Ft. Wayne picked up some players from other teams," explained co-owner of the local team Art Dore Jr.

Dealing with adversity is part of the process of long term athlete development (LTAD) based on a national blueprint for USA hockey, said Colleen Dore.

"The ADM (American Development Model) followed here is articulated by Ron Wilson, 2010 U.S. Olympic Men's Hockey Coach and 7th all-time winningest coach in NHL history:

"The ADM, through utilization of LTAD principles, allows us to integrate training competition and recovery programming with relation to biological development so that we can fully get at a kid's potential. The ADM offers equal opportunity for recreation and competition -- a key to retaining younger players."

The Icehawks, shut out in Saturday's game, had 32 shots to 69 for the visitors. Elliott Wrasse played 11:50 in goal, handling 21 shots and making 18 saves for the locals. Alexander Montagno was in goal 48:10, handling 48 shots and making 37 saves.

The struggling Icehawks were 0 for 5 in power-plays while Ft. Wayne was 0- for 12 in the first game. The Icehawks were in the penalty box 56 minutes on 15 infractions.

In the second game, Travis Greer (assists from Justin Lacy and Chance Hayes) and Cameron Bruff (unassisted) each scored goals for the Icehawks, both coming in the third period.

Montagno was in goal 36:27, handling 52 shots and making 47 saves. Wrasse took on 13 shots and made 10 saves during his 23:33 in goal.

The Icehawks improved their penalties to 33 minutes on 11 infractions while Ft. Wayne had 21 minutes in the box on 9 infractions.

In a telling statistic, Ft. Wayne had 65 shots to 21 for the Icehawks. Ft. Wayne was 2 for 6 on power-plays while Tri City was 0 for 7.

The Icehawks next will face Michigan at home at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, and then will travel to Ice Mountain for a 5 p.m. game with the Mountain Cats on Saturday Sept. 25. ###
