Goal of this project is to provide citizens with tools to easily identify local fish that are safe to consume.

The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) has been awarded a $76,154 grant for a project to teach people about local fish that are safe to eat in the Saginaw River Watershed.

"This award is an excellent opportunity for MDCH to provide fish catching, cleaning, cooking instructions and portion recommendations to the Saginaw Bay area," said Janet Olszewski, MDCH Director. "This project will be the first of its kind in this area to provide targeted populations in Saginaw with useful information about health and safety concerns involved in fishing in the Saginaw, Shiawassee and Tittabawasee rivers."

MDCH will focus on working with community groups that are interested in promoting healthier choices for fish consumption from local bodies of water within the Saginaw Bay area.

MDCH will also study the fish and wildlife harvest and consumption behaviors associated with citizens in the region in order to better understand the information that will be valuable to the community.

Goal of this project is to provide citizens with tools to easily identify local fish that are safe to consume. Outreach information will be developed as part of this project to help enable citizens to safely eat more fish from local bodies of water.

A local steering committee consisting of local health departments, corporations, and natural resource agencies will assist MDCH in developing the program and associated outreach materials.

This grant was awarded by the Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network (WIN), a volunteer organization that focuses on opportunities to better link the economic, social and environmental well being of Saginaw Bay communities.
