Don't Be So Sensitive

For many people, the pain and discomfort from sensitive teeth make hot or cold foods impossible to enjoy. All is not lost. In many cases, sensitive teeth can be successfully treated bringing welcome relief.
The Cause? Usually tooth sensitivity begins as temporary tooth discomfort or pain after eating cold food, drinking cold liquids or breathing cold air. Most commonly, the problems begin when the gums recede, exposing the roots of the teeth. The root structure is not protected by enamel. This exposed tooth surface contains small pores that lead directly to the nerve of the tooth. Pain, pressure and cold stimuli can travel down the pores and trigger the tooth nerve causing pain and discomfort.
Recession can happen for two reasons: Brushing too hard. It is estimated that 50-90% of people use too much pressure when brushing. Over time, they remove significant gum tissue exposing tooth roots. So, reducing the pressure we use to brush our teeth is essential.
Poor oral hygiene can lead to plaque buildup around teeth and gums. Over time this plaque hardens into tarter. Bacteria in this tartar are responsible for the gingivitis and periodontal disease that cause gum recession. It takes 2-3 minutes to properly brush all tooth surfaces. It is also important to floss between the teeth to remove debri that your toothbrush cannot reach.
The Treatment: Try switching to a sensitivity toothpaste containing strontium chloride. These products work with the mineral in your saliva to crystallize and cover pores in your exposed roots so that cold stimulus cannot reach the nerve. Also, avoid highly acidic foods (citrus, soda pop, tea) that can increase sensitivity and work against the sensitivity toothpaste. Don't forget to discuss tooth sensitivity with your dentist for other options.
