IceHawk winger, Justin Lacy lets one fly. First Period Buries Icehawks in Saturday Game

Saturday night the Icehawks found themselves in a 3-0 hole less than five minutes into the game. And when you are a team, whose roster is in transition due to injuries forcing new signings, the continuity or lack thereof opens scoring opportunities that the Motor City Chiefs took an early advantage of as they built a 5-0 lead. While the Icehawks fought back to make a game of it, the hole was too deep as the Chiefs scored an 8-1 road victory.
The Icehawks came out aggressive putting offensive pressure in the Chief's zone. But Chief's forward Jeffery McFarland slipped behind the Icehawk defense for a short breakaway beating goalie Elliot Wrasse over the right shoulder for a 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, rapid puck movement by the Chiefs found winger Ryan Brown alone in the slot for a quick wrister to make it 2-0.
Motor City kept the pressure on as they attacked the net. Wrasse made a save that deflected across the crease to an open side of the net and Blake VanTiem buried the puck for a 3-0 lead five minutes into the period.
Goalie Elliot Wrasse was kept under pressure as he held off the next wave of shots. But the defense struggled to clear the front of the net. Following two close range shots and saves, Chief's Calvin Ball picked up the loose puck and made it 4-0.
The Chief's made it 5-0 to close out the scoring for the period. Justin VanHecker picked up the puck on the right boards, skated across ice uncontested and lifted a back hander under the crossbar for the score.
The Icehawks came out with a lot of fire to start the second period. Putting pressure on the Chief's goaltender, they were unable to dent the twine as the Chief's defense denied second shots. Then the Chief's Brian Jacobs took a pass from behind the net beating Wrasse from the dot ending the goaltender's night.
Alex Montagano took over the goaltending duties and was quickly tested. Holding off the initial flurry gave the Icehawks a lift as they moved the pressure to the Chief's end of the ice. During a flurry, Joe Pennicooke picked up a rebound beating the netminder for the Icehawks only goal of the night making it 6-1. The thrill was short lived as 16 seconds later Motor City scored again closing out the period, 7-1.
The Chiefs added one more score in the third period to finish the game at 8-1. While the game was clearly at hand, both teams continued to skate extremely hard as many of the Icehawks are still trying to show they belong here and want to develop something special.
Next weekend, the Icehawks travel to Wooster, Ohio for a three game weekend series.
