Michigan's firearm deer hunting season runs Nov. 15-30. About 630,000 hunters are expected to participate, much the same as 2009, according to most state officials.

According to the Livingston Daily web site (Livingstondaily.com) Early numbers indicate that this season's firearm deer hunt will be larger than last year's, according to Michigan Department of Natural Resources Deer Program Leader Brent Rudolph.

Rudolph said southern Michigan check stations report seeing deer in nice shape and an abundance of older bucks, though he said public land hunting is "a little slow."

The Indian River buck pole is an annual tradition for many hunters during the opening week of deer season. This year 78 bucks were on display early in the week -- the largest 178 lbs, 10 pt

FROM AROUND THE STATE

THE STATEWIDE FORECAST -- Brent Rudolph, DNRE Deer and Elk Program Leader 517-641-4903 ext. 248 -- Deer are not evenly distributed across the state. There are considerable differences in habitat and deer numbers across Michigan?s three regions; the Upper Peninsula (UP), Northern Lower Peninsula (NLP), and Southern Lower Peninsula (SLP). In addition to this regional variability, every year hunters only a few miles apart have very different experiences observing and harvesting deer.

For those looking for a place to hunt, there is no substitute for personally scouting areas in advance of a hunting trip. Maps and computer-based tools are also increasingly available to narrow in on the best locations to focus scouting efforts, including the new Mi-HUNT interactive web application available at www.michigan.gov/mihunt.

FROM THE SOUTH -- Hunters can expect to see more deer in southern Michigan fields when the firearm deer season opens Nov. 15

. State officials say much of the corn has been harvested unlike the 2009 crop that largely was standing when the season opened and made it difficult for hunters to see many animals.

"The herd numbers are great and we have had good weather for growing fawns. Acorns are still dropping, so there should be plenty of deer for hunters, said one state DNR official.

Hunters killed 243,000 deer statewide last year, about 52 percent of the 445,000 that were killed in total by firearm and hunters and those participating in other seasons, such as archery and muzzleloading.
