Dow Corning and its joint venture, Hemlock Semiconductor Corporation (HSC), are adding to the largest expansion in the history of polycrystalline silicon industry.

The firms are committing $1 billion dollars in investment over the next four years to expand the polycrystalline silicone capacity.

The expansion "continues to impact Saginaw County and the Great Lakes Bay Region with its multi-billion dollar investment and hundreds of jobs created," said JoAnn Crary, president of Saginaw Future, Inc., public-private economic development agency.

The company's latest local expansion created more than 300 new jobs and added more than 800 construction jobs.

Dow Corning is investing to expand its portfolio of total solution packages for solar cell manufacturing, module assembly and installation. The firm has been providing ultra-high purity polysilicon to customers worldwide for more than 45 years.

Dow Corning recently announced a fourth expansion of the Solar Solutions Application Center in Freeland. The 27,000-square foot research facility, opened in 2008, completed a $1.2 million lab space expansion in the second quarter of 2010.

Now a fourth expansion, with total investment of $845.000 is underway at the Solar Solutions center. More than $8.5 million has been invested in the past two years.

A team of 26 engineers and scientists staff the facility, which is designed for even further expansion to meet the needs of the growing solar and photovoltaic industry.

In addition, Dow Corning is planning an investment of $3.53 million over two years in infrastructure and new equipment at its Heath Industries Materials Site (HMS) Facility in Thomas Township.

Much of this investment will involve a new electrical substation and relocating the existing substation. Tooling and molds will be purchased to support commercialization of fabricated tubing and other production equipment, resulting in retention of 10 jobs.

Total investment now is nearing $15 million in the Thomas Township facility. It is the only Dow Corning site dedicated to supplying products to the health care industry and is a federally registered and inspected producer of bulk pharmaceutical ingredients.

Manufactured at the facility are a wide variety of health care products, including pharmaceutical tubing, pacemaker leads and others.

The rapid expansion demonstrates Dow Corning's commitment to advancing the solar industry by collaborating with solar industry leaders to develop the next generation of solar technologies, the firm states.

As one of the only companies in the world to provide silicon and silicone-based solutions throughout the entire photovoltaic value chain, Dow Corning will continue to invest in exploring the possibilities of solar energy. Polycrystalline silicon is the key raw material used in the majority of solar cells.
