Delta College is initiating a program to train people for a new and growing job market -- in-home caregiver.
The number of trained in-home caregivers will nearly double by 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
The need for more workers signals the fact that the United States is in the midst of a significant and growing care-giving crisis.
About 1.4 million older Americans live in nursing homes, nearly 6 million receive care at home, and significant numbers go completely without the help they need. And the growing disparity between the demand and supply of care-giving services will only worsen with the aging of baby boomers in this country.
Delta College has partnered with the Care-giving Project for Older Americans, a partnership of the International Longevity Center and the Schmieding Center for Senior Health and Education and the support of the MetLife Foundation.
The Schmieding Center for Senior Health and Education of Northwest Arkansas (SCSHE), located in Springdale, Arkansas, provides older adults and their families with education, healthcare, information resources and other services for more positive aging.
Education services include unique in-home caregiver training programs, public programs on positive aging, and professional programs to improve the geriatric expertise of healthcare professionals and students. Healthcare services include comprehensive clinical care and rehabilitation by an interdisciplinary team of geriatric professionals.
The Schmieding Center is a partnership of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, the Area Health Education Center-Northwest, and Northwest Health System.
Since 2007, The Care-giving Project and the MetLife Foundation awarded twenty-four U.S. community colleges grants to develop home-based caregiver training courses. Each selected community college was awarded up to $25,000. The grants provide funding to community colleges to either:
establish new home-based caregiver training programs
enhance programs that already exist for professional and family caregivers
The Care-giving Project for Older Americans is intended to address a growing care-giving crisis by encouraging the expansion of caregiver training programs for family caregivers and in-home care workers.
Delta College LifeLong Learning will offer short-term, job-skill training courses in Personal Care Attendant and National Caregiver Training Program beginning in May 2011.
The courses are intended for in-home or institutional caregiver jobs, also providing a career ladder to a CNA, LPN/ RN or other health occupation programs offered at the college.
"Our mission is to raise the Great Lakes Bay Area's awareness of the critical need for caregiver training and the central role that community colleges can provide in this training," said Delta President Jean Goodnow.
Centered on home care for a family member over 50, care-giving has become an increasingly important issue for our local communities.
This course was designed to teach important medical and safety skills. The program offers 20 hours of online instruction and 10 hours in a group setting allowing students to share experiences and concerns with other caregivers. Hands on learning, demonstrations, lectures, discussion, skill evaluation are included in every class session.
This 30 hour program will include instruction in infection control, safe wheel chair use, positioning the care recipient in bed, personal care, taking vital signs, safe use of medications, fall prevention and fire safety. This program also will provide students with the basic skills, knowledge and awareness for the non-paid in-home caregiver, family member or volunteer who needs to provide a safe, healthy and supportive environment for a loved one.
