Christmas -- Most, Loveliest Time of the Year -- HUMBUG!

YEAH . . . RIGHT . . .

Christmas comes but once a year . . .

Thank God . . . (pardon the badly contrived pun)

Holidays and "me" just don't seem to get along. I've always thought it had much to do with the newspaper business, advertising deadlines and the fact that my birthday . . . December 8 . . . seems to always get in the way.

Ever since I hit 50 . . . and that was some time back . . . The Tsunami of Christmas "joy" seems to "swell up" just as I'm coming down from the birthday reminder that "the end is near."

My lovely wife Donna, (she loves to be mentioned in my columns) says I need therapy. She's probably right. But I've got as much chance getting to a therapist as Archie Bunker did.

I know how to take care of myself . . . Now leave me alone.

This particular Christmas is particularly discouraging.

The kids have moved again (both of them) and each move drags them further and further away from their "parental units."

Chris is married, now working for the University of Illinois while his wife makes a run at a law degree. Jessica has packed her bags and moved to Seattle (could it be any further away) and is aligned with a medical research team that battles the perpetuating evil known as Cancer.

I finally understand why my Mom (I was an only child) guilted me into coming home from Colorado to be "closer to the family." Now it's my turn to worry about "the kids" and wonder when we will get to see them again.

Every once in awhile this time of year, I find myself humming "Cat's in the Cradle. "

Click that link (above) and I guarantee it'll bring you down:
  • faster than an express elevator . . .
  • faster than Dick Butkus on an end sweep . . .
  • faster than a screen door on a submarine . . .
  • faster than a parachute with a 6-foot tear in it . . .
  • faster than the Titanic . . .
  • faster than the Walls of Jericho . . .
  • faster than a passenger plane over Pakistan . . .
  • faster than a chimpanzee can fling poo . . .
  • faster than Demon Drop at Cedar Point . . .
  • faster than a pit bull on steroids!

    That was fun . . . If you've got a "faster than" to add . . . just put it in the comments . . . If not . . . Humbug . . .

I got shopping to do . . . How many days 'til Christmas?
