Eric Jylha welcomed the members to the first Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Eye Opener Breakfast of 2011.

Fresh ideas, fresh new Board of Directors to go along with the fresh coffee and breakfast at the Bay Valley Resort & Conference Center, 2470 Old Bridge Road, Bay City as Covenant Health Care, Dow Corning Corporation and Financial Edge Community Credit Union presented The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Eye Opener Breakfast.

Michael D. Seward, Chamber President, introduced the New Chair Person for 2011, Alice Gerard of Bay Regional Medical Center. Gerard said, "I'm looking forward to serving as Chair and I feel it is a challenge and will try to do my best to represent the Chamber."

Keynote speaker was Douglas Newcombe (Pictured at Right), Superintendent of the Bay City Public Schools. "I feel very blessed to live in Bay City. We have a terrific Chamber of Commerce making the community a better place." said, Newcombe ,

"At the Bay City Public Schools our drive is to improve the lives of our students," Newcombe continued. "In the 2009-2010 school year, we have a program by the Food Service Department offering free breakfast and lunch for the elementary students," Newcombe said.

"We have a new Curriculum Director and we are working on intervention programs during and after school. It is one of our main focuses and our goal is that we want them to graduate and go on to bigger and better things."

Newcombe also addressed the issue of "Bullying" -- Stating that it was a big problem, causing kids to miss school and even leading to bigger disasters. "We do need the parents to be involved," Newcombe said.

Pertaining to facility issues, Newcombe said that the District is working on a long range plan to improve efficiency, to concentrate on building repair for existing structures and also consolidation.

"We also want to extend the number of Pre-school programs in the Bay City School system," Newcombe said. "Right now, four of our elementary schools offer Pre-school and we hope to get it into more."

Newly elected State Representative Charlie Brunner and New Bay City Mayor Chris Shannon both were in attendance at the Eye Opener Breakfast.

Brick Awards went to the World Café Restaurant in Downtown Bay City. Owner, Diana Hadad accepted the award. A second Brick Award went to SSP Associates Inc. Gary Glaza, Chief Financial Officer accepted the award.
