This was a make it or break it weekend for the Tri City IceHawks. The IceHawks needed to win both games against the Mountain Cats if they wanted to secure the final playoff spot. But the Cats dominated puck control as they unleashed a 63 shot attack to post a 6-0 win Saturday night.

Ferocious skating was the tone for the first period as Tri City looked to get on top with an early goal. But the Cats defense refused to let Tri City get control of the puck long enough in the offensive zone to set up plays thus keeping Tri City off the scoreboard. Then the Cats got the first break when goalie Bryan Westendorf got spun out of the net after making a save. The Cats quickly dumped the puck out front where John Arms buried the shot for a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later the Cats would make it 2-0. Bryant Danielson found himself alone right in front of the net and backhanded the shot just under the crossbar.

Tri City struggled to mount an attack as they were forced to make long range shots without the benefit of players in position for rebounds. The Cats went on a powerplay when defenseman John Starling was whistled for tripping. Like blood in the ocean waters, the Cats attacked with a barrage of shots within fifteen feet before John Arms scored his second goal of the period on a rebound giving the Cats a 3-0 first quarter advantage.

The Cats continued their net assault to start the second period. Controlling the puck in their offensive zone as if on a powerplay, they were aggressive on net but Westendorf and the rest of the IceHawks defense withstood the attack. Tri City got a break when back to back penalties by the Cats gave the IceHawks a two man advantage. But the aggressive defense on the puck by the Cats kept Tri City from setting up and getting quality shots on the goalie keeping the score at 3-0. The IceHawks wouldn't fare as well when a cross checking and moments later a hooking penalty put the Cats on a 5 on 3 advantage. Moving along the perimeter, the Cats fired then attacked the net picking up the loose pucks and finally sliding it into the net for a 4-0 lead.

The third period was total domination as the Mountain Cats came after Tri City with a full scale assault. The Cats fired 27 shots in the period compared to the IceHawks 6. And while Bryan Westendorf was more than up to the task, the Cats were able to get two shots by him making the final 6-0.

On the night, Westendorf faced 63 shots as compared to the IceHawks 33. The big difference was the IceHawks inability to clear the rebounds or control the hard charging forwards. This was contrasted by the Cats forcing long range shots while keeping the front of the net clear. Tri City's hope was to change their fortunes Sunday.
