Saturday Tennis Racquet Demonstrations Planned in Midland

MIDLAND?The public is invited to join members of the Midland Community Tennis Center for free participation in a series of Saturday tennis racquet demonstrations, featuring the latest technology from top manufacturers.

Coordinated by MCTC Tennis Professional Terry Hicks, USPTA, the sessions are planned from 1-2:30 p.m. February 19, March 19, April 23 and May 14 on two courts, one for demonstration and one with ball machine for practice.

Among the new racquets will be Prince, Babolat, Wilson and Head. Members may purchase racquets at a discount with coupons for court time, lessons, and pro shop items, Hicks said.

Free Tennis Open Houses are planned Saturday, February 19 from 3:30-5 p.m. at the Tennis Center. A QuickStart Open House is aimed at 10 and under youngsters. The Play Tennis Fast Open House is for adult newcomers and restarters. Sharon Cleland, MCTC?s Director of Tennis, coordinates.

Cindy Vickery, manager of the USTA?s two-time National Top 50 Welcome Center at the Midland Community Tennis Center, has been named Director of MCTC Leagues, one of the largest programs in Michigan. She replaces Jen Spence who recently was named SVSU Women?s Tennis Coach. Vickery will retain her Welcome Center role. Next league session is March 6-June 9. Call 631-6151 for information.

National wheelchair athlete and instructor Dan Bolhouse is developing a wheelchair tennis program at the Midland Community Tennis Center for physically disabled adults and juniors. For information, contact the Welcome Center (989) 631-6151.

A self-named Guppy League for newcomers and restarters is taking off at the Midland Community Tennis Center Sundays from 7-8:30 p.m. with 20 players, all women. ?We could use a few good men,? said Coordinator Greg Wagner, USPTA. Contact Wagner at 631-6151.
