Garber Girls Falls to Birch Run Lady Panthers, 47-23

It's been a tough year for first year coach, Dave DuFort. After a very slow start in the first quarter, his Lady Dukes fought back over the next two quarters. When the cold shooting returned, his Lady Dukes lost to Birch Run 47-23.

Both teams started with great intensity and hustle. Birch Run ran a full court press from the opening tip off that Garber struggled with resulting in several turnovers. But an aggressive Garber defense kept many of those turnovers from becoming points as the Dukes fought back. But cold shooting couldn't overcome the pressure as the Panthers built a 13-0 lead before two free throws put the Dukes on the scoreboard. By the end of the first quarter, the Lady Panthers had built a 16-2 lead.

By the second quarter, Garber had adjusted to the press and was able to work their offense. Janessa Urban knocked down 6 points to help Garber to narrow the margin to 21-10. The third quarter started much like the first. Putting in more of a trapping press, Garber struggled mightily to get the ball up court resulting in multiple turnovers again. But much like before, the hustling Lady Dukes kept those turnovers from being converted into points keeping Birch Run from running away with the game. Garber fought back to be outscored by only two points in the quarter and being down, 32-19.

The fourth quarter was all Birch Run. The Panthers dialed up their defense denying Garber the inside and forcing outside shots. When Garber was unable to score, the Lady Panthers rebounded and pushed the ball up court. Holding Garber to four fourth quarter points, Birch Run ran away with a 47-23 win.

Sarah Hartley led Birch Run with 18 points while Whitney Kelly added 12.

Garber was led by Janessa Urban's six points and Danielle Bolzman added 5.
