The character of the IceHawks was tested Sunday afternoon following a disappointing loss the night before at the Dow. Several players called off sick Sunday leaving the Icehawks so shorthanded that goalie Bryan Westendorf suited up and skated out. The remaining IceHawks showed their strong character as both young men and hockey players as they gave their all for the full 60 minutes. While the scoreboard didn't reflect their efforts, those who watched the game saw winning men play their hardest.

Besides having a short bench, Tri City was forced to move top goal scorer and assists leader Justin Lacy to defense. Second leading point getter, Zach Bauer also did double duty rotating between defense and forward to help out the depleted defensive ranks. While both did an outstanding job from the back line, their offensive presence was sorely missed.

The first period was a great display of hockey effort. Due to the jumbled lines, Wooster was able to keep the puck in the zone and pepper goalie Alex Montagano with 27 shots. Even with this pressure, he came up big multiple times to keep his teammates in the game. Helpful too was the defensive play around the net as the IceHawks helped out their netminder by clearing rebounds to limit second and third chances by the Oilers. Wooster was finally able to score first on a rebound and later in the period. The second goal occurred while the Oilers were on a powerplay when a delayed penalty gave the Oilers a two man advantage. The extra skater allowed the opportunity for Corey Berney to slip in back door for a one time pass and goal.

The second period didn't start quite as well when one minute into the action, a shot from the blue line was screened preventing Montagano from seeing the initial shot as it found the back of the net. Wooster fed on the goal by tallying five more times before Tri City was able to dent the twine. Zach Bauer blasted a shot from the blue line that Ryan Meier deflected in as he was camped in front of the net.

Determined to keep the Oilers from reaching double digits on the scoreboard, the IceHawks continually challenged Wooster as they crossed the blue line disrupting their flow and slowing the Oiler attack. Tri City held them to one goal as Alex Montagano and his defense fought and scrambled to keep the puck out of the net making the final 9-1.

Tri City's final home game is Saturday at the Dow. Game time is 4pm. The game is part of the IceHawks/Spirit doubleheader so come enjoy and some great hockey.
