The University of Michigan Business School checks hotel customer satisfaction.

So does Steve Kent of your area news site, MyBayCity.com.

The U-M says Hilton Hotels Corporation, that runs the DoubleTree Hotel - Bay CityRiverfront, is ranked number one in the hotel industry for customer satisfaction.

The Steve Kent ranking shows the DoubleTree right up there in the opinions of computer software specialists, too.

Mr. Kent took the measure of60 software specialists from around the globe at a recent conference sponsored by Mid-Michigan Computer Consultants (MMCC) of Bay City, a company affiliated with the news site MyBayCity.com.

Software specialists were here from New Zealand,Germany, England, Belgium, Canada and other points around the globe, he said.

"The rooms were great, the staff attentive, there were plug-ins in the rooms and also wireless," said Kent.

While the software conference attendees were pleased with the hotel accommodations, transportation in downtown Bay City proved a challenge.

"Everything closes up early," said Kent. "There is a lack of convenience stores and the hotel has no shop for essentials or gifts," he said. "But everyone had positive comments and they loved the Delta College Planetarium."

Meanwhile, a report from several hundred Lutheran pastors and their wives who filled the DoubleTree last week also was positive. "Most had never been to Bay City and they were impressed," said Kent. "Having a facility like this over the long term will be very positive. I'm proud of our little town."

Meanwhile, the DoubleTree has climbed over 50 percent occupancy after recording 24 percent and 39 percent the first two months, according to hotel industry reports.

"It will probably take about a year for the occupancy to reach a good point and level off," says Hratch Basmadjian, manager of the Bay City Holiday Inn.

The Bay City Times reported recently on parking problems downtown when large conferences are at the DoubleTree. Some observers have noted that a larger parking ramp was a victim of economies that were necessary when the hotel was in final planning stages. The single story ramp could be expanded by adding additional floors.

Local promoters, meanwhile, point to the positive rating of the Hilton Corporation in support of the decision to contract for the DoubleTree brand here.

Latest statistics from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) give the third first-place ranking in five years for Hilton.

With a score of 77 points out of a possible 100, Hilton regained the leadership position among the six hotel companies mentioned in the survey. In addition to posting the highest score, Hilton also achieved the largest percentage increase (+4.10%) from 2003 to 2004.

The American Customer Satisfaction Index is produced through a partnership of the University of Michigan Business School, ASQ, and CFI Group, which measures customer satisfaction in the competitive hotel industry on a regular basis. Hilton Hotels Corporation develops, owns, manages or franchises more than 2,100 hotels, resorts andvacation ownership properties. Its portfolio includes many of the world's best known and most highly regarded hotel brands, including Hilton(R), Conrad(R), Doubletree(R), Embassy Suites Hotels(R), Hampton Inn(R), Hampton Inn & Suites(R), Hilton Garden Inn(R), Hilton Grand Vacations Club(R) and Homewood Suites by Hilton(R).###
