The nation's pioneer land-grant college was founded more than 150 years ago, guided by a philosophy to serve all the people of the state -- an idea that still prevails in 2011.

ANR Week continues to be one of the largest events of its kind in the nation.

The Farmers Institute laid foundations for the week more than a century ago. In 1898, Michigan Agricultural College hosted the first statewide Farmers Institute "Round-Up." Agriculture Hall was completed in 1909, and a fourth floor auditorium provided the meeting place. Five years later, the round-up combined with farm association meetings to become the first Farmers Week.

More than 90 years have elapsed since its inception, and the topics of interest have changed with the times. In the 1960s, it was the space age; in the 70s, it was science and cybernetics; and the 80s bought forth issues related to world hunger. In 1982, Farmers Week became Farmers Week and Natural Resources Days followed by another name change in 1985 to Agriculture and Natural Resources Week. The event now hosts more than 75 programs and annual association meetings.

ANR Week 2011 will provide a wide variety of topics in areas such as agriculture, horticulture and natural resources. Events like the Quiet Water Symposium, the Michigan Wildflower Conference, the Michigan Organic Conference, the Michigan State Rabbit Breeders Association (MSRBA) Rabbit Show, the Choices food and nutrition conference and the state convention of the Michigan FFA are slated for ANR Week 2011.

Other events scheduled to take place during ANR Week, include:

** Michigan Barn Preservation Network Conference

** Michigan Herb Associates Annual Conference

** A therapeutic gardening conference

** Spring Goat Day

** Cheesemaking workshop

Free ANR Week program guides with dates, times, locations, costs and event descriptions will be available beginning Jan. 27 from any county MSU Extension office or the MSU Bulletin Office, 117 Central Services, MSU, East Lansing, MI 48824-1001; 517-353-6740.

A complete listing of programs, conferences and educational opportunities is available online at www.anrweek.canr.msu.edu, or contact program coordinator Megghan Honke at 517-353-3175, ext. 229, or honkemeg@msu.edu. ###
