The Friends of the Bay City State Recreation Area (Friends) have been working hard to raise $74,000 to save the observation towers in Tobico Marsh. On April 19, 2011 they reported that the Frank N. Andersen Foundation awarded a grant of $41,800 to the Friends for engineering design and construction activities that will be the foundation of the work to restore the TOBICO TOWERS.

Fund raising by the friends had already raised $10,600 through a Comedy Show, a 5k Run/Walk, a Fish Fry, and a Bike Ride. That leaves only $21,600 to go.

Built in the mid 1970's, the popular towers have experienced nearly 40 Michigan winters and they show their age. In recent years climbing the towers might leave you feeling a little sea sick from the gentle swaying. Several years ago the towers were inspected and closed to the public.

SAVE TOBICO TOWERS (STT) is a project of the Friends of the Bay City State Recreation Area (Friends) assisted by the Saginaw Valley Sustainability Society and individual volunteers. Volunteer members of several groups in the Saginaw Bay Watershed have committed to raising the projected $74,000 it will take to restore the 2 viewing towers located inside Bay City State Recreation Area. The towers were built in 1975 and need extensive repairs/rebuilding to be of future use.

FRIENDS will be conducting a HUGE GARAGE SALE Thursday through Saturday (May 12 to 14, 2011) in Auburn, MI in front of Cheeri's Feed-n-Seed and Birder's Boutique located at 301 W. Midland Rd. Auburn, MI. You may donate items for sale Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 5pm until 5/12/2011 at Cherri?s. Call Cherri Allen (989) 662-3333 or Pat Race (989) 894-2785 for more information.

Details of the TOBICO TOWERS Project can be found at www.sagvalss.org.
