City Flushing Water System This Month

That's a lot of water! When Bob Dion opened the hydrant on our corner the flow was really impressive. The water department is doing annual maintenance by flushing the system. "We're doing the West side this week and the East side next week", he said.
Flushing is important for keeping the system running smoothly. Sediment collects over time and flushing cleans that out. "Since we started being really diligent about it a few years ago the job has become easier. It used to take 30 minutes or more to clear a section. Now we can often do it in 10 minutes" said Dion.
Three men are working the system from north to south. After opening the valve on a few hydrants Dion sits at one and watches for the water to clear. "You can see that it's still a little yellow. It'll be clean in a minute". Sure enough, it cleared. Dion turned it off and went to the next one.
Besides wet streets, residents may notice a brown color to their water for a short time after flushing in their area. The advice is to just run your cold water for a bit to clear the lines to your house. "You don't have to worry about the color" said Dion. "The water is safe to drink.".
The advice is to run COLD water in your house. Unless you've been using hot water while the flushing is going on, your water heater tank probably has clear water in it. If you run both hot and cold to speed up the process, you'll just store brown water in the tank. So just run cold.
Dion commented that rarely someone will experience low pressure after a flushing. That could be from a stuck meter. "If that happens, just call the water department and we'll come out and take care of it. But it hardly every happens" said Dion.

I realize that this has to be done but I do think the city should post signs stating what they are doing and that there may be water across the road to help avoid what could be a accident with legal suits to follow
Thank You
Dave
