When looking for a great summertime vacation destination, people in the midwest think of Chicago, Traverse City, Mackinaw Island - and Downtown Bay City? Really. It's all about having great things to do and see. And with a beautiful riverfront location, great dining and shopping, plus the best events and activities around, Downtown Bay City belongs on the list!

The Bay City Downtown Management Board (DMB) thinks providing information on Downtown Bay Cit as a tourist destination is an important message to get out and has developed a marketing campaign using the theme Baycation in Downtown Bay City! "With high gas prices, tightening budgets and a new appreciation for buying local, spending time in a easily accessible, traditional and affordable Downtown makes good sense," according to Candace Bales, Executive Director of the Bay City Downtown Management Board and Development Authority.

"You can bring your boat up the river to Downtown Bay City, dock for the day at Wenonah Park, browse the specialty and antique shops, and dine at a sidewalk café, before attending a free evening concert in the Park. The perfect summer day!"

Using electronic media, e-marketing will include direct links to a long list of available activities and events designed to make it easy for a visitor to plan ahead. Some of the many options include: day and evening sails on Bay City's own tall ship, Appledore IV, riverboat cruises, shows at the Delta College Planetarium, 25 restaurants and a wide variety of one-of-a-kind specialty shops, the award-winning Doubletree Hotel-Bay City Riverfront, weekly concerts in the riverside parks, plus events such as the Riverside Art Festival, Dow River Roar and Bay City Fireworks Festival.

To move forward with the promotion, the Baycation in Downtown Bay City marketing campaign needed to be social media based. Revenue funds for DMB marketing efforts are mainly from a special assessment on Downtown properties which have been decreasing the past couple years.

By having a well-designed website, www.downtownbaycity.com, and using permission-based email messaging, Facebook and Twitter, along with word-of-mouth, the DMB believes the message of Downtown as a destination will be effectively provided to potential and repeat visitors.

Bales notes the marketing campaign also works well with the "Be A Tourist In Your Own Hometown" trend as it reminds people who live in the immediate area of all there is to do. "Bringing more people into Downtown Bay City for a day or a weekend is a great opportunity to showcase our entire community. It will help our local economy grow and hopefully encourage people to put us on their destination list again next year!"
