Stars and Stripes Forever, a rousing music composition composed by John Philip Sousa on Christmas Day, 1896 greeted Bay City residents as they gathered at the Veteran's Memorial Monument in front of the Bay County Building on Thursday morning, November 11, 2004

Former military service men and women, along with friends, families and well-wishers gathered for the annual commemorative ceremony in Downtown Bay City.

For many, it was a re-union of sorts. There was a lot of hand-shaking and warm greetings. For others, it was an opportunity to remember family members that had "fallen" in past wars.

Brigadier General Richard D. DeMara (Retired) spoke to the group and reflected on the many soldiers and military personnel that have served in the many wars over the history of the USA.

DeMara spoke of the 1,200 dead in the Iraq conflict and of the often forgotten 8,000+ casualties that are also victims of the Iraq campaign. DeMara reminded the on-lookers that as 'Vets' must also continue to monitor the 'VA' system as it gets "clogged" with injured military personnel from foriegn conflicts.
