Downtown Bay City kicked off the Friday at the Falls entertainment series with Bay City Central's Steel Drum Band, The Bay City Steelers.

Friday at the Falls is held every Friday evening at the waterfall park located at Third and Water St. in Downtown Bay City. The crowd poured into the parking lot at St. Laurent's candy shop and stretched out beyond the waterfall in the opposite direction.

Alice Baldwin and Ruth Averill from Saginaw came to Bay City just to see the show. "Thank you Bay City for having so many wonderful things going on. Next week we'll come early and bring chairs!" they said.

Steel drums originate in Trinidad and Tobago. The group played a variety of percussion instruments including lead pans, double tenors and base pans. They also incorporated vibes and marimbas.

All of the members of the Steelers are students at Bay City Central High School. They include Taylor Rupp, Garth VanWert, Alyssa Cozad, April Lukowski, Rachel Aguirre, Bronson Dault, Zach Barber, Xavier Cervantes, Adam Kloha, Brent Avery, Matt Rudy, and Elise Poirer.

"I like playing all of the instruments but my favorite are the double tenors" said Elise Poirier, a student at Bay City Central and a Bay City Steeler. "You have to learn two parts and it's really challenging but feels cool when you finally get it" she said.

The Steelers play at various local events and can also be hired for private parties. Contact the director Katie Hoyt for more information at 989-714-1955.

The BCC Drum line will be holding a garage sale Thursday July 14th starting at 8am in front of the BCC band room. If anyone would like to donate to the sale, they can drop off items Wednesday July 13th from 11am to 4pm in the band room.

Next Friday Scott Baker & the Universal Expression will be entertaining the crowd with a mixture of rock, blues and jazz. Come early and bring chairs.
