Temperatures were not the only thing soaring this past weekend as the Tri City Icehawks held their first of two local tryouts for this year's team. Approximately 20 players showcased their talents over a three-session weekend, hoping to catch Coach Stirling Wright's eye and make the team. Coach Wright utilized the larger Olympic rink to not only test their skill level, but also their summer conditioning and desire to play at this level.

This weekend's camp is the third camp Coach Wright has conducted. The first Icehawks camp was conducted in Charleston, South Carolina expanding the talent base to the eastern seaboard. This also allowed several players who have either played for or against Coach Wright in the Carolina leagues to showcase their talents in hopes of improving their skill and climb the hockey ladder.

The second camp was held in Holland, MI and was a combined camp with the new Kalkaska team that is scheduled to play in the Icehawks division.

Besides this past weekend's camp, the Icehawks plan on scheduling one more local camp in hopes of bringing out many of the talented players who have graduated from the area high school programs and are looking to better themselves for future hockey goals or test themselves at a higher level.

Coach Wright noted that players interested in playing for the Icehawks, who are currently playing in a summer league, can contact him and he will come watch you play. Players may contact him directly at 989-475-6372 or GM Colleen Dore at 989-493-1565.

Coach Wright's upbeat attitude and sense of humor brought out a spirited effort on the ice by the players. Utilizing all the ice surface, players skated hard with great effort and intensity which even produced the first shattered glass on a hard wrist shot. It became very clear that his positive motivation coupled with his vast pro coaching level experience and ultimate desire to keep the experience fun and competitive with raising the Icehawks to a competitive and fun team to watch.

The team camp is scheduled to be held August 13 and 14 at the Bay County Civic Arena starting at 10am. This is a mandatory camp with all signed players participating.

The Icehawks annual Team Dinner Cruise is scheduled for Thursday, August 18. This is a great time for a chance to meet the players and Coach Stirling, have a nice meal and enjoy a beautiful cruise on the Saginaw River and Bay. For tickets or more information, contact Colleen Dore at 493-1565.
