Notice the heat this summer?

For many climate activists it is not a coincidence that we are seeing record high temperatures, drought, and disastrous urban tornadoes. And they want to do something about it.

Thus a Boomer Concert between World Café and Rattlesnake Ricks 706 Saginaw Street in downtown Bay City starting at 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2011. Both restaurants will be serving food and drink specials at the concert.

Local groups, the Saginaw Valley Sustainability Society, Lone Tree Council, and the state Michigan Environmental Council, are sponsoring the concert to both raise awareness and funds for climate action.

Musical groups the Reivers, Duality/Cornpone, Born, The Last, and vocalists Jen Cass and Laurie Middlebrook have volunteered their talents for the effort.

What is a 'boomer' concert?

"It is the 60s music that accompanied the dramatic social change of those decades," said Lone Tree Council chairman Terry Miller. Songs like 'Who'll Stop the Rain, Blowin' in the Wind, and Teach Your Children.

And the connection with global climate change?

'If you consider the birth of rock and roll to be about 1954,' according to Miller, "The amount of carbon dioxide in the air was about 312 parts per million - today it is at 391 and going up 2 ppm a year - that is a recipe for disaster and we are seeing it with nearly every news report."

According to Miller scientists say that the earth can handle 350 ppm carbon dioxide and the United States is doing little to combat the cause of the warming: the burning of fossil fuels, particularly coal. That means, like the 60s, local action is needed.

"As musicians, as citizens, I feel we have to do something to address what might be the issue of our generation," said the Reivers' Pat Trahan.

"It is crazy to think that some people believe global warming is a hoax," said Born's John Studniarz, "Melting ice caps, lethal hot spells, burned crops; we are pleased to be able to perform for groups reaching trying to address this issue."

The cost of admission is $10.00 in advance, $12.00 at the door. Advanced tickets can be purchased at World Café, Rattlesnake Ricks and Herter's Music Center.
